I just handed in death amulet and all he gave me was "life shard".

The amulet was worth 355k and the life shard is 2k...

It was my first time doing this so I have no clue on what the usual prizes are, but I looked up all the amulets and they are all 350k or more! Have you ever gotten something good from him? Are his quests even worth it?

The Mage will always either give you a shard or a tome in the same type as the amulet that you turn in. The shards are pretty worthless compared to the amulets, but the tomes are all worth like 2-3 million or more. The tomes are books that can be read to your pet, or they can be used as stat boosters for pets that are used for battling.

The drop rate for tomes is much lower than the drop rate for shards, to keep the value of the tomes up. I know a lot of people who have high level battle pets will usually turn in amulets in large batches at a time (like 100 or so) to get more tomes at once than if they did it like a few amulets at a time. But the average drop rate is still the same whether you turn in 10 amulets or 100 or more.

People like to try to get the tomes for stat boosters if they have battle pets, especially once the pets get to higher levels because it starts costing more in the training center and in EXP from the battle coliseum to increase their stats. But if you don't have a battle pet and aren't interested in battling, it's probably more worthwhile to just sell the amulets instead of gambling on the tomes.

If you want the tomes to read to your pet or for a pet's TC, you'd also probably be better off just buying the individual ones you need from another user's shop and also just selling whatever amulets you have instead of gambling them.

ooooo math~

Based on turning 1000's of tomes, the drop rate for the tome is 15%. The fluctuation of this percentage decreases with the amount of mage amulets you turn in b/c the law of large numbers. As far as I know, there's no cap on the amount you can turn in in a day and get tomes.

Based on this percentage (15%) and the SS price for tomes (~2.7mil), I assume you get 15 tomes/100 amulets you turn in. 15*2.7=40.5mil, or the SP value for turning in 100 tomes. Divide that among the 100 mage amulets you're turning in--40.5mil/100(mage amulets)=405k/amulet, the breakeven price. At the 15% exchange rate and the 2.7mil price per tome, you can make money by buying tomes at <405k, exchanging to tomes, and selling the tomes, or by selling mage amulets at 405k+ prices

Of course, to account for the variability of the return rate, I usually only buy amulets at <350k and turn in hoards of hundreds. Even then, it's not always profitable.

My battle pet can still be trained in the Training Center so I don't have any use for the tomes, really. I just resell my amulets for profit.

Thank you both! This is very good to know :3 Bravo on the math btw, I am the worst at it so whenever people do it it's kind of like a magic trick haha :P

Hmm, so I guess based on that math it is possible to make a profit by turning in amulets. Just keep in mind that it wouldn't be a guarantee, because the average drop rate of 15% for tomes doesn't mean you'll always get 15 tomes for every 100 amulets you turn in, there's still a bit of randomness. But that information can help you decide what you want to do with them. c:

Yeah :3 I think for now I will just sell them, but as I become a more advanced player I might start to gamble a bit, but for now I'm still too new and 350k is still a lot of subeta points to me.
