I'm working on an overlay for

Litten, and I'm wondering how the rules work with overlays for tribute pets.

I've done some big updates since last night! From the original, the face markings are slightly edited, its more purple than gray/black, the fire on the back and tail is not something on the original and I've decided not to add the leg markings or tail tip fluff. Is this far enough away from the original? If not, what would need to be done to be passable?

I'd say it looks good as is. Personally, I think as long as it's not official art it's fine, so you're golden. <3

Are you wanting to upload it as an official custom overlay?

I actually had a somewhat extensive conversation with one of the custom approvers recently via the ticket system, and I got a ton of clarification about this. When you go to upload the picture, it says:

To ensure you&;re cooperating with copyright law, you must make at least four changes from your original source material if it&;s not official Subeta art.
This is specifically referring to situations like yours, when you're using a copyrighted character. You have to list them in the Additional textbox like you did here. It sounds like you have four to me, but I'm not really familiar with the character to know better.

To quote my ticket convo directly:

That rule refers to making fan-based overlays. For example, if your overlay was based off a Pokemon, you would have to have four changes from the source material to make it look not exactly like a Pokemon... Because it is copyright material, we need it to have enough distinct changes. If you do not want to make changes like that, you are welcome to still use an unofficial overlay.
There was also a bit in there about not using pictures someone else has drawn elsewhere on the internet, but I'm assuming that you've drawn that, so it doesn't apply.
Anyway, to sum up, it sounds like your drawing works within the copyright rules/laws. :) If you want further clarification, you could always file a ticket before you upload.

Oh right, I forgot about custom overlays, but yes yours is fine, it looks removed enough from the official design of Littens :3
