I had a couple of people ask how long we've been around for, only to be kind of surprised at the answer. For the rest of you who joined us in 2019 and might be curious, here's a summary.
I do want to make some points about the evolution of the directory though! ❤️ I started off with a list. You can see some remains of it here. I also have a giant beast of a backup saved, which is what the list looked at the end of Survival 2018, and you can see that in the second post (didn't edit to fix any name changes though) and wonder how I survived.
❤️ I had two lists at first - the biters divided by strain, and a list of people seeking to be bit in the OP.
❤️ The seeking list was eventually abandoned when people starting keeping track of requests in their own posts instead, since the lists weren't being updated while I was offline. That makes among the first (or maybe the first) post wrangler.
How 'No Victims Left Behind' Came to Be It was a phrase I just started sticking in the titles of the directories. I don't quite remember why I chose this phrase in particular, but we were good at it, and we did infect everyone who signed up at the VIP. If you joined us in 2019, you are probably well aware of how good we are, but we were just a bunch of people who hung around at a thread at the time. We kind of made a team from a bunch of strangers, well before the group was formally made.
How NVLB as a Group Came to Be I felt like we had a close group going, so in the last couple of days of Survival, I went ahead and made the forum group, using the motto I made since names are hard and I had a character limit. I used the forum image I made for myself as the icon since I was in a hurry, but I think he's become an unofficial mascot.
Replacing the List with Ping Groups We talked it at first briefly in 2018 during Survival. We noticed people were having trouble with the ping limits, and how it tricky it could be to try to ping everybody on the list to find one or two people who were online. We had vague ideas about the ping groups as a solution to that, but we didn't do anything with it at the time since we all decided it was probably going to be complicated and it might mean a lot of people getting a lot of pings. We weren't exactly wrong.
wouldn't let the idea die though. It was brought up after Survival by krae, and then towards the end of the year (around October, I think), when I started preparing the list again for 2019, it was brought up again. Krae tested some interested, and we kind of agreed that if we could get together, it would probably be more streamlined. Krae was the one to make up most of the group names, and was the one to make all of the groups at the time. Even though I was nervous about it, we started Survival 2019 with that version, with a starting list made in case things went awry, only for the ping groups to be more successful than I think anyone really imagined.
And the rest, I think, you guys know.
I didn't edit this at all. Some names have changed since, so you'll notice some formatting errors.

The History of NVLB should be a book in the zombie den.
I went from 0 bites to Infection Specialist (and then some!) last year thanks to all the biting we did on that first NVLB board! The individual ping limit did make it difficult though, it was easier just to hang around the board and see what people were asking for.
I seem to recall that the 'NVLB' phrase first got used because no matter who people pinged, we always made sure they got infected quickly and that no one got left behind. Then someone suggested it should be part of the board title and it stuck!
This year's system worked really well, even if I did end up ignoring the pings anyway and just stalking the board whenever I was online.
