Because these are wigs:
and these are eyes:
Oh, and these are mouths:
And there's this too: I bet you didn't know exactly what that was until you hovered over it, huh? Unless you happen to own it.
I've had people on this site argue with me that most wearable items on this site have pictures that show what they are. That said, I've also had people argue with me that this site is PG-13 when we have the Kinkylove set and a whole hell of a lot of gore. And no, we weren't talking about the community guidelines at the time, I know that by the rules for some reason the community is supposed to be more PG than the site is. But I run into items like this constantly - things that aren't labelled as what they are, things that don't even have a color in the name, or if they do the color name is crazy or in the middle of an item so you can't easily search all of the color variants. Searching for anything takes eons, you can't just look at something and know what it is or it doesn't give an accurate representation of how it would look on your avatar.
At one point I abandoned Subeta for another website, full of designs I loved, but for this post the important factor is the naming scheme and item previews. I understand if people don't like item previews that are basically cropped screenshots of the avatar wearing it, it's not very stylistic and even that can be (and often is) done poorly. But done right it makes it much, much easier to tell what I'm looking at without having to go one by one by one by one... And these naming schemes, oh god these naming schemes. There isn't a naming scheme. These items get named whatever the heck someone feels like, they don't even have to describe the item. On that site the color was always simple, and it was always at the end of the item name, like "Grapes Purple" or "Fluffy Unicorn Pink", not "Undead Chartreuse Llama" - and on the other site mentioned those first ones would be exactly what's described. The grapes would probably be in your hand, and the unicorn would probably be standing behind you. That last one? On Subeta, that could be a pair underwear with polka-dots on it for all we know.
I realize Subeta's staff is working on reworking the layering system, and I sincerely hope that what they come up with helps, but as it is right now it's literally impossible to properly browse through hairstyles without also having to look at every single hat and other miscellaneous head item on the site and the pictures and names don't help you figure out which is which at all.
People often seem to think that I am new to this site whenever I make my posts, and I suppose I can understand that given my post count. I'm not a particularly social person, I prefer sticking to small circles instead of having to expose myself to an entire bulk community of strangers - forums are really not my thing. Unfortunately though, I am far from a new user. I've been on Subeta for over 10 1/2 years. Plenty of time for small annoyances to become big ones, and unfortunately taking a break doesn't help.
There are a lot of things I hate about this site and I know I bring negativity to it - because of my generally closed nature I don't tend to say a lot unless it's to complain, like now, but I can't bring myself to leave this site. I love a lot of the items here, and Subeta is actually responsible for a good deal of my real life style. I don't see a lot of other sites that make such use of catsuits and corsets, when they're not sticking to just the popular stuff there's a lot of really great potential for expressive avatars here. It inspires my artwork as well, I'm not saying there's nothing for me here. I just.... The problems that are here have persisted for so long that it's infuriating. I hate tedium, and that's 99% of this site down even to making avatars because of having to go through each freaking item individually. And then running into dumb problems like not having the item I need for an idea, while also not knowing what the right item would be.... And the times I have asked other people have always ended up either just as stumped as myself or making suggestions that aren't even remotely what I asked, and when I go more general with it it's repeatedly clear that people here.... have an extremely different style from myself.
I don't know how people on this site enjoy looking through the items. I enjoyed it back with the site barely had any items, but now the only thing I get out of it most of the time is frustration. I get that most people who are on Subeta come here after a day's work and just want something slow and probably kind of mindless, it's a lot of why I don't get along well with people here. I'm not like that, at all. I am crazy for design and productivity, for self-expression. What's relaxing to me is to make progress, not to be impeded at every turn. It wrecks my flow.
I want Subeta to be better, I do. It has its gems, and that's a lot more than I can say for any of the other still existing websites than I've tried. (The one I referenced earlier closed a long time ago.) And I know that I am an odd one out, one could probably say that most of the people who are here belong here and I'm not one of them. I'd like to think though that an item system that actually makes sense would benefit everyone, even if you are just here to chill and take your time with things.

Aww, but think of the creativity it takes to come up with the CIs and names for all these fabulous things! I, for one, would find it boring to have everything named in a manner that is so restricted as what you are describing.
But yes, it takes all kinds!
OOf yeah, as someone who loves making HAs I definitely see your problem, the HA system desperately needs a tagging system for colors and actual uses >__< (At least I think that'd be the best compromise for this situation, lets people have the pretty CIs and fun item names while still making it possible to find things)
I'd like a tagging system, because I do agree I've given up trying to discern what something is based on the name and the CI. I don't want to squelch creativity, but sometimes things can be too creative and they fall into the void of thousands of wearables we have on this site.
If a tag system was implemented, it'd be easier, at least for me.
I think the problem with naming everything with like "only basic color+plain clothing name like tee or pants" would be running out of those names. Cause, how many pairs of black pants do we have on site? Including CWs? "Black pants 1", "Black pants 2"? Yes, it can be nightmarish and it surely is tedious but I find most long term games to be tedious. Also, I did look thru ALL clothes at one point (using SLodge checklist), bought/WLd what I like and didn't bother with something I def wouldn't use. Now I build HAs with just what's in my WR, that's just a fraction of all items and it's way less frustrating.
There's always been a few odd items just because, but the majority of items did used to be just shirts/wigs/etc if you look back at older item images (excluding the one-off weird ones, lol). Newer ones are more likely to be nonsense because a lot of users (including artists) lobbied for more interesting and varied item images so they could be used in pet treasures. Which is how you end up with sewing kits that are pants, and lamps that are tops, etc. I do believe at least one of the end goals of all the wardrobe changes is the ability to tag items so you can just look for lips/hair/whatever though so...someday? ;)
Items here are tiny af. It might be easy to put the avatar's melon head in a 64x64 box to show off different lips or eyes, but how do you fit something like the Amateur Cryptid Sketch or the Mist Shrouded Artifact into that same box? Any long hair like that would make it just as impossible to decipher.
The only kind of solution for this that I could think of would be something like the ability to switch what you see in the wardrobe. Instead of displaying a full page of item images, have it display a full page of just the overlays? This wouldn't help you search for things any faster or more efficiently, but you'd be able to see many overlays at a glance instead of having to hover over each item individually at least. I have no idea if it's feasible, though.
This infuriates me too hahaha. I want to be able to just browse hairs, or hats and headpieces, or all makeups. We have a category for just ear decorations and it's like, infuriatingly close to something actually useful lmao. I want the other categories to be that specific. The wardrobe layers are so cumbersome and takes for flipping ever to just browse for relevant items. It would significantly help if we could just have these thousands of items properly categorized. Before we even start talking about tagging items we should talk about how useless these two layers are: HEAD and HAT. It's the wild west in the wardrobe right now, or should I say, the categories are made up and layers don't matter.
I personally love having fancy item previews that have interesting wearables. I think the items themselves would be significantly more boring without cool and unique previews, and I don't have an issue with item hovers giving me info at all. If in the wardrobe we could actually sort thru items in literally any useful way it would not be such a big deal, I feel.
The naming schemes can be silly but tbh custom wearables are thirty times worse and it's a lost cause at this point with users getting to name their own CWs. Again, let me sort thru items based on an accurate and useful category in the wardrobe, and the unique/silly names won't bother me.
I hear there is a wardrobe V4 in the works, I m really eager to see if this has been addressed. I'd love love love if it was.
i definitely see the problem, i really do. browsing for certain things on the site can really be a nightmare and it totally sucks to have to go through page after page in the wardrobe.
also though as someone who constantly builds TCs for pets, i'd hate to see these sorts of items become a literal representation of what they are haha
a tagging system would be abso-freaking-lutely fantastic though. i feel like i remember at some point a while back there was a color tagging system...?
Wow, I really didn't expect this kind of response. I... I'm honored. That said, I think a lot of you have some really great ideas. The tagging system would be great, and an option to swap to a full preview mode if possible would be fabulous! True it'd take longer to scroll through just because the images are larger, but I think overall that would actually help speed up the process for me.
As for the pet treasures thing that a few of you have pointed out, I don't tend to do much with my pets or their treasures so the thought hadn't crossed my mind. I probably shouldn't be as surprised as I am that people would make use of it in that way haha. I could see that, though.

I love how the CW artist rules are that all wigs must have some hair visible or they're an automatic denial but most official wigs are like the ones you just listed.
It's a joke. Tbph.
When I say this, one of the items that springs immediately to mind for misleading items is this:
You'd think it's a fish, right? A pretty little origami fish and I almost bought it because I wanted an origami fish but nope! It's a fox.
Insert eyeroll emoji here.

I agree! I hate spending hours flipping through the wardrobe. I've used drawers, and that is helpful, but there are too many things and not enough drawers. A tagging system would be wonderful! A well done colour picker would be great! And 's suggestion of being able to view the preview rather than the CI in wardrobe would be excellent. Even better would be all of them!
Because I really do like the "random" images - not only for TCs (though that's great), but just because seeing the same thing over and over again is just as tedious as having to flip through page after page of the wardrobe.

's suggestion, anyone been here long enough to remember the offsite HA builder Arvee? It had the ability to either show the items or the overlay. I loved that and miss it. I found it so much easier to make HAs and made so many than compare to now where I can't be bothered to wade through the wears trying to find something.

@ Shay Pair Arvee's item/overlay toggle with a colour search and you have something that's a gift from Shinwa herself. 🙏
That site was a godsend for making fun outfits and character avatars. :/ I just keep recycling the same outfits now because I can't be bothered to wade through things. With 30k+ non-CW wearables onsite, it's so damn tedious to remember what's what, what colour it is, and if that random item in your Head layer is a wig, an accessory or an actual critter.
Like... I get why so many wearables have overlays that are different from the item image, and it's great to have things that both fashionistas and pet people will adore and want to use! But it's also so very frustrating to try and figure out what's what. 😩 I either remember the item image, or the overlay, but since I usually can't draw a very clear baseline to connect the two it's all in limbo for me.
I can't even begin to imagine what it's like for people who own tons of CWs. My brain would backflip into the sun.
It's definitely challenging.
At first I thought it was a problem, like you say, FairestMoss, but after a while I got into it as part of the challenge of the game. Remembering the graphics and their (often unrelated) names and images that represent them is a process, for sure, and not one everyone would enjoy, but it does add something, somehow, to Subeta for me.
Drawers in the Wardrobe help to an extent. I have a drawer for eyes/eye makeup, lips/lip makeup, hairstyles, short skirts, gowns, body parts (wings / tentacles / ears / legs / tails /etc), masks, glasses, ground items (because they are not all on the ground layer and not all items on the ground layer are actually ground!), and some other things that are not easily figured out from name or layer. I categorize every few days the most recently acquired items. That helps tremendously!
I so agree with you when it comes to drawers. You can use the toggle for CW or non-CW is helpful. I too use drawers in wardrobe. It’s tedious but in the long run is helpful. I have drawers for CW wigs. Subeta wigs. Make up. Other face items. Hair decoration. Etc.
If hat and head were not separated, that would be a huge category. I don’t mind the two.

That particular option with the CWs is one I've been aware of (and used) since it was first implemented. I generally have it set to "Non-CWs".
I actually just finished sorting some of the more major categories into better drawers. I've got a long way to go before I'm done, but currently this is what I've got:

It's a lot, but I'm intending to completely replace the standard drawers with my custom ones so that I only have to deal with one drop-down menu. I've only got the first few drawers completely organized, I'm still working on the rest (and on refining the rest of the drawers themselves), but just getting the major categories organized has really, really helped my opinion of making avatars on Subeta. It's just taken a few days or so to get there. :/

Wow. That’s a lot of drawers. I just stumble around my wardrobe. Lol.

oh look a key!
