I left my cult/forum group but I'm still getting "There are new staff posts on a topic you've posted on" notification every time a Group Admin posts (or I guess when they want to post with their purple bar). Pretty useless as I couldn't even see the posts if I wanted to; as I get the -Oh No! You aren't a member of this forum group- error page if I click on the notification.
It's not a big deal; just more of an annoyance than anything, but is there a way to stop/opt out of the pings? I've looked under Forum Preferences, regular Prefs and didn't see the option.
Also I left the forum group over a month ago and it's still happening.
That actually sounds like a bug as opposed to something you did / didn't do. I would make a bug report instead about this.
This shouldn't be an issue, are you sure you left it properly? If you did, then they mod is pinging you specifically. They may not realize you aren't responding/participating in something they think you might be normally interested in because you just left.
Ask them to stop doing that.
I think it may be because I've posted on that specific thread/topic in the past that I automatically get the staff posts topic ping? I looked at the mods' previous posts and no one has pinged my username individually.
I don't mind the staff thread pings about site updates/things that are important. I didn't know that cult/forum group mods could have "STAFF" status through pings.
I'm assuming I left properly as I went to the forum group page and clicked Leave -group name-. Is there something else I need to do that you know of? Thank you!
that is what you do. I don't think that a Forum Group owner gets Staff status.
Actual Subeta Staff can presumably post on cult threads even if they're not members, and sometimes if staff forgets and is part of a Forum Group and posts there as pink instead of gold, you might accidentally get pinged by them that way too.. Try asking via Ticket in Help to see which way it is going?. I have exactly one CW and I didn't do the art for it. I get pinged by to threads that only go to CW artists just because I have a CW, but I can't go to those threads.
I know that one of the group mods can do this. I think the term is "admin" actually oops XD
I remember receiving this notification from the group admin the first time-, and her post had a purple header. I said "I'm not used to seeing staff post notifications for our chat group" She said something like "well how else am I going to get everyones attention lol"
So, even if you turn off pings for a forum group they can still bug you by giving you a "new staff post" notification.
I really wish they didn't have that option. I think staff notifications should be reserved for actual staff.
Thanks, if it begins happening a lot I will file a ticket.
a purple post is by a MiniMod, so they are not officially paid staff but they are official volunteers. They are not supposed to be able to post as purple unless they are the actual MiniMod of the Forum section that they are posting in. Otherwise they get turned regular color flag on top of their post but with a teeeny tiny gold icon in front of their username. Is your former Forum Group in their Forum section? Then maybe they can't turn the purple off like paid staff can turn the pink off.
I do know that for the former Forum Group I was a member of, I had no idea who the admin was because the original creator of it went AWOL and the new admin didn't have a special color on their posts. I had to ask around.
It sounds like it might be a glitch and it is worth filing a ticket to see if it is.
it's possible you're being pinged if the option to ping all who had posted prior is clicked. As for the group admin section any admin in a group can change the bar for status updates to make sure it stands out. :) Not sure about staff information showing up but thought I'd share what I'm aware of at least. Hope it helps.
Admins in forum groups can choose to post with purple bar. I own a group and I've seen the option. The option is also available on the advertising forum for me, as I am a MM for that forum.
It sounds like OP's problem is a bug though, because it should not continue to ping you to a thread you cannot see, it sounds really annoying.
Definitely post this in P&B and see if they can fix it for you :) If possible, would recommend that you contact your old group leader and ask them to make a new thread or stop checking the ping everyone option, as pinging the group itself in the body of the post should be more than sufficient for gaining attention.
"any admin in a group can change the bar for status updates to make sure it stands out."
When this is done it apparently makes a "staff topic" notification show up. I honestly think that has to change :/
EDIT: Ok Jovi informed me it is the "Event Everyone" option being clicked that's causing this. (I guess that's the "ping all who had posted prior" thing you mentioned)
I'm just going to stay out of groups from now on.
I think I misspoke when I said "ping" It's a broad event notification that says "There are new staff posts on a topic you've posted on"
I usually click on them because I assume it's something important from a site update forum/topic. And when I click on the notification I'm denied entry because I'm no longer a member of the forum group...thus have no access to the topic.
Thank you so much for this info! Should I have this thread moved by a MM or make another post in P&B? ^_^
Yes, I know what you're talking about. When you're an admin of a forum (whether its a forum group or a normal forum) theres options to alert those who have posted.

Your former group leader keeps checking the "Event Everyone" box as well as the "Official Post" box. The first one doesnt really change much (adds a purple bar to the post) but the "Event Everyone" box is whats sending the annoying alerts.
Can this be moved to P&B? :)
Thank you again. It's like what's the point of muting group pings if an admin can override it by using that?
It's not something that's happening excessively, but occurring enough to make me wonder what on Earth was going on and why. (especially when the notifications glitch and it looks like 20 different ones, but it's the same one just all duplicated haha)
I def agree, that option should be taken away from forum group admins, it seems really unnecessary.
yeah, I suppose that's what's happening. You aren't the first to have encountered that sort of issue. Someone left a group I'm in a while back and they weren't very kind when they were still receiving pings. I couldn't figure out what was going on and that was the only thing I could think of. I actually had to go in and delete their posts, which is ridiculous when the thread has 4k worth of posts. Granted I should have just reported that user for harassment seeing as they weren't very nice about it when I wasn't sure what they were referring to being pinged for the group when they had left but it is what it is. As an admin I do use that feature from time to time to try and rouse group interest since the group is not always super active and just check in. Never meant to annoy anyone in doing so. Would be nice if former members would not receive the alerts once they are no longer a member.
...yep, that sounds like unintended behavior.
Hands and arms inside the thread, we're moving to P&B.

After staff discussion, we've made the decision to remove the "Event Everyone" functionality from forum group admins.
