So this show is one of the best shows on Syfy.

You could say it's an adult themed/mature Harry Potter, but there's so much more to it. Also, before you start watching, trigger warning for rape and other mature topics.

Currently 3 seasons, The Magicians is on tv network Syfy. The first 2 seasons are currently on Netflix. I HIGHLY recommend watching it. Super underrated, IMO.

The show revolves around 7 vastly different students who attend a magic college in essence. The story begins following Quentin and his love for a book that has a magical world named Fillary which turns out to be real, as is magic. The show has amazing character development and its plot is deep, dark, and ever evolving. Season 1 was great, season 2 is amazing, and I'm currently watching season 3 which, my god, a couple episodes were so so so good.

My favorite character is Eliot by far. I love the character interaction between Eliot and Q, and Eliot and Margo. Least favorite character is definitely Kady. Julia and Alice are low on my favorite list as well. My favorite episode is in season 3 with Eliot and Q and their whole segment in Fillary during the key quest plot line. Ugh, so good.

Yes, hello, this is my favorite current running show. Though haha I have the exact opposite character preferences. Julia is my favorite, followed by Q and Kady. I love all the main 7 characters very very much though. Penny deserves so much better than what he gets.

S3 is by far the best of the seasons. My favorite episodes are Thirty Nine Graves and The Fillorian Candidate. I'll admit that first one is just a favorite because of the amount of Julia and Q friendship in it. Their friendship is my favorite thing about the show, I'm diehard for those two being platonic soulmates.

just curious, what makes Julia or Kady a favorite? I mean, I can see kinda Julia in a way but Kady was just too much for me.

Ohh so many things!

So for Julia, she's this genius who has always been good at EVERYTHING she's done, who suddenly is cut out of, failed at, this thing that she KNOWS is part of who she is (and she's actually right about this! like at first it seems like she's being selfish but she IS right). She's never actually had experience at losing before so yeah, she handles it very badly. In fact, she happens to excel at handling it badly. But there are layers to it. Her best friend in the whole world disappears, her mind is altered but SOMETHING happened, she's confused and freaked out and doesn't really have anyone who understands and then BAM, hedgewitches offer her answers in exchange for little pieces of who she is, who she wants to be, and she takes them up on the offer, but loses herself for a bit. To me it's a fascinating portrayal of depression and how it can be really nasty. Also, she tries SO HARD to fix things and they just get worse and worse and worse because that's what magic does, it fixes one thing and creates 10 more problems. But in the end she wants to make up for the stuff she's done, she wants to help people, and she'll sacrifice everything to help people. My friend put it this way and it's perfect: Julia had to lose her Shade to find out that her greatest attribute isn't her intelligence, it's her empathy.

As for Kady, hooo boy. She was raised with magic, with a mom addicted to the stuff, and she's seen the dark side of magic forever. She doesn't particularly LIKE magic, even, but it's a means to an end, a way to protect herself. She was sold into essentially slavery by her mom and she loves her mom soooo much she did whatever Marina asked to protect her. She falls for Penny, not meaning to at all, but she doesn't think of herself as a good person and doesn't want him to fall for her and thinks he could do better, but Penny being Penny is an all-in kind of guy. Kady is very very reserved with her love because of her mother, because of how loving one person can literally ruin your life which she knows well, but she gives her love to Penny and then to Julia. She's ride or die for the people she loves, she'll go to the ends of the earth to help them, and unfortunately for her it's resulted in people dying, in her being forced to kill, in all of these things that have just proven again and again to her that love isn't worth the effort, and yet she still wants to help them. She's mad at Julia for nearly all of season 3, but she still wants to help her. She hasn't bonded with most of the characters because it's dangerous to bond, to love people, but for Penny or Julia she'd fight gods.

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings. Did you finish season 3? Because I don't want to get too spoilery for Julia.

This show is so amazing, but the books are even more so.

I'm with - I like Kady. :) She wasn't in the books, but she has a really interesting storyline.

Marina is a horrible person but she's fun to hate.

Yeah! Apparently she was gonna die in the first ep but they decided against it and now we have her and I'm glad we do.

Oh same! Marina is fun to hate and she's also a really funny character. I'm wondering how Marina 23 is gonna effect things.

I did not know Kady was originally doomed--or if I knew it, I forgot!

There's an old script of the pilot floating around, and she dies when the Beast attacks. In the books there's a character named Amanda Orloff who died when the Beast attacks and Kady was somewhat of a replacement for her and even shares a last name as she's Kady Orloff-Diaz.

Mhm!! I'm glad Kady is her own character, even though I liked what little we saw of Amanda. But both of them are badass ladies who try to fight back against a terrifying monster, and that is awesome.

Honestly I can't get into the books but it's in part because I don't like book!Q. I tried to read the books before I saw the show and then after. Before I got bored of Q's college years. After I already had Julia as a favorite and she doesn't show up for most of the first one. I'm still working on them and I've heard that The Magician King is amazing with the Julia parts so I'm determined to get there, but where I'm at Q is living with Alice in NYC and they're being lazy. Penny JUST showed up at a party out of the blue so the plot should be going forward now (though I don't like book!Penny near as much as show!Penny where I'm at in the books)

I think with Q in the books, either you relate to him (I do) or you don't. But I also liked Alice a lot. Basically in the books and in the show, I like most of the characters quite a bit. Eliot is super adorable.

The elements of him that I relate to are things in myself I don't like, so I think that's part of it.

I can see that, I think a lot of Quentin's flaws are really relatable to the kinds of people who play sites like Subeta :) I think learning to work with/around your flaws is the way to go, so if you know you are a certain way, make it work for you and have tactics to deal with situations where you can't let it get out of control?

Mhmm, definitely agree! Q hasn't started so much working with it yet, as he's just lounging around doing nothing in NYC, so I hope that happens soon!

Pretty late to the bandwagon but I love the Julia appreciation I see here
