I have never been able to quite put my finger on it but there is something about animation that has always thrilled me to no end. In particular I enjoy the older hand drawn animation from the 1930's basically through till the early 2000's when computer animation really boomed (Not that I dislike computer animation) I'm a huge Disney fan and I would love to connect with other people who also admire their animated films as much as I do. I'm not all that new to Subeta just starting anew after a three year hiatus and I hope to find new friends to talk to.
Since I couldn't begin to pick a favorite movie I'll ask what your favorite format to watch films. I think nothing beats going to the movies and seeing it on the big screen. The new 3D is amazing and I almost always pay extra for the DBOX feature if it's available. Yet my mother absolutely hates going to the movies. I'd be interested to hear your favorites.
I would say that animation is still one of my favorite styles of movies/TV!! I'm not sure whether it's due to growing up with an artist for a best friend, which has really made me appreciate art in entertainment spheres or if it's because I have more childish tastes (which I don't deny one bit - one of the things I think is great about animation is how well it can adapt fantastical elements or contain completely unique world-building characteristics, which oftentimes doesn't quite get pulled off in non-animated productions).
I'm a big fan of Disney and Studio Ghibli, and also a smaller Irish animation studio called Cartoon Saloon (their animation style is really unique -- the hand drawn art is absolutely stunning and they have a really unique way of playing with perspective). It's a newer animation studio and so far they've only come out with 3 feature films, but I recommend all three if you haven't seen them!!! (the films are called The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner - I like them in that order, with The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea tied for first and The Breadwinner as a close second :P).
I agree with you on watching movies in theaters! I personally don't mind if a film is 3D or not (it adds to the experience but also sometimes I'm too cheap to get the 3D ticket ;P) but I really like the atmosphere of just going to the movies and making a big event out of it!
I'm also definitely not new to Subeta (I'm been around for a while and recently had nothing else to do so I figured I'd come back on and join the community again) but I love talking to new people and making new friends :)
I haven't seen as much really old animation (outside of the mainstream Disney/Studio Ghibli - I tried to go through and watch all the animations from both those studios but I'm sure some movies fell through the cracks); do you have any to recommend? What about animated series? Do you enjoy those as well?
More and more people I talk to today haven't seen some of the classic Disney movies since they were little kids and don't remember them with any clarity at all. Actually recently I've been trying to find old people here (Canada) who might have seen Song Of The South in theaters. It came out in '46 so it's hard to find anyone. It was released on VHS overseas so I bet it'd be a lot easier if i asked people on the internet.
My reccomendation with old cartoons is to watch the shorts that came out before 1940 from both Disney, Warner Brothers and Fleischer Studios (Responsible for Betty Boop) in particular anything that was banned at the time turns out to be far more interesting than the rest of the cartoons. I don't believe censorship is good in any circumstance so I enjoy seeking out 'banned' works.
I also have a huge love for adult cartoons. I like that low brow, dirty joke humor a lot. I enjoy Family Guy, American Dad, Rick and Morty, South Park, F is For Family, BoJack Horseman and many others like that. An old favorite of mine that doesn't seem to be around anymore is called Rick and Steve, Happiest Gay Couple. It was a show made out of Lego long before that caught on and was showed on late-night Teletoon
I haven't heard of that small Irish Studio but I believe I've heard the titles before. I will have to seek them out.
I love animation! I've admired the works of the more popular studios such as Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, etc. but I'm very much a fan of lesser known studios such as Cartoon Saloon (Secret of the Kells, and an adorable pre-school tv series Puffin Rock), Laika (Coraline, ParaNorman, etc) and Aardman Animations (Chicken Run, Flushed Away, etc)
I'm not old enough to have seen Song of the South in theaters. I have seen it though. That's more my parents' era.
I love Rankin Bass as well. More notably they are known for holiday stop-motion films like Ruldoph and Frosty. My favorite by them though is Mad Monster Party. Such an amazing cast of voices long before it was made popular by current studios and I love the stop-motion style. Laika films I consider to be a newer contender in that style of animation.
Rankin Bass is also responsible for some amazing 'traditional' animated films like The Last Unicorn, two Tolkien animated films, and The Wind in the Willows.
I love animated tv series as well. My favorites have been any of the superhero series by Bruce Timm. My favotite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series is the one that aired first in 2012. It's very nostalgic to me because it was something that I bonded with my son over.
I used to love shows like Mtv's Liquid Television especially one of the projects called Aeon Flux by Peter Chung. I own The Chronicles of Riddick, also by Peter Chung.
I watched a lot of anime on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. I like Trigun and Cowboy Beebop. I'm more particular about anime. I admire the projects that come from the Ghibli studios.
I could go on and on about animation really. I love comic books too. I follow many artists online that are considered "indie" when it comes to animation and comics. Mainly because I think they are not as well known as DC, Marvel or Disney etc. Many artists I follow have gone on to be part of many animation projects as well.

I absolutely adore animation, it's been inspiring me to draw ever since I could hold a pencil. Big fan of hand drawn animation too, in my opinion there's a certain kind of magic to it - raw pencil emotion that really brings it to life. Not that I hate CGI, I love all forms of animation, but traditional will always be my favorite. It makes me incredibly sad that pretty much everything is computer animated now - I miss seeing 2D movies in the theaters. Some of my personal favorite animated films include The Lion King, Balto and All Dogs Go to Heaven. I've always adored Don Bluth's work. Have you heard about his current Dragon's Lair project? I'm hoping it'll help bring 2D back to the big screen.
Love Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells (I even had a cat named Pangur Ban)! Still need to see The Breadwinner but it looks great. Cartoon Saloon has a beautiful style! Have you ever seen the Russian animation The Dog Door? The way it's animated is just gorgeous! You can find it on Vimeo with subtitles.
Also a fan of animated series (as if my username wasn't enough of a giveaway; yes - Disney Afternoon nerd here) and growing up in the 90's I loved everything from Gargoyles to Animaniacs. One of my childhood favorites is The Legend of White Fang which is a great cartoon but relatively unknown by most people.
