Suggesting this now as a possible feature for this year's Luminaire season.

Even though you can select your tree, trees have always been shown against a white background, so there's no context to show if the tree is an indoor tree or an outdoor tree. Having a selection of backdrops to go behind the tree would be a nice addition and might help inspire different ways of decorating the trees.

It used to be that the Luminaire Tree was part of your HA image. This was discontinued because some users didn't like it. Is this what you mean? Or do you mean an entire larger-than-tree-sized ornament?

The problem I can see with this kind of thingy is that it would involve coding the tree into its own layer so you could put something behind it instead of making the same backdrop over and over and over again with holes in it for each shape of tree. The other problem is I think the trees as they show on your User Profile, they don't show the white behind the tree but the backdrop image you have yourself.

Maybe users could program little tree-box-sized bg images? Or Subeta could offer them to unlock like they do Site Themes?

I have confidence that by making this suggestion in July, I've provided more than ample time for an implementer to figure out how z-index works.

And somehow, HA's have their own background images yet fit quite nicely in user profiles.

Did you see these as genuine problems, or were you just playing devil's advocate?

I'mma actually agree on this one-- add to your tree's aesthetic with backgrounds. It could be super cute or like what if you could be THAT person and have a horror movie tree set up in a creepy room. :'D My concern is actually too many backgrounds being done if they decided to do this. We're lacking on pet work (and that's a whole different thread/issue) so I'd rather time and effort go into that, but it would be kind of nice if they did a small handful for the trees. Most Aesthetically Pleasing Tree Contest, anyone?

Doesn't seem it'd be too difficult a thing I would think. It'd give artists something else to do painterly backgrounds for and release in the cash shop as always.

I think it would be nice if there were some backgrounds. I don't think too many are required to start with - maybe some generic indoors one and a couple of different outdoors ones.

I think this is a cute idea in theory, but ngl I'd really disappointed in the site if essentially a ton of time and effort was put into a ton of tree backgrounds that would only be used one month out of the year instead of the events that happen towards the end of the year that should be pet heavy but seem to, not be so much.

But I'd definitely support a couple indoor/outdoor backgrounds! Something they could add a couple more to each year etc etc.

My main concern with this is that the trees are pretty big, so I'd think a matching background would take more time than a normal HA background. That sounds like a lot of added work for something that only gets use one month out of the year, which also happens to be the busiest time of the year for Subeta's artists.

Though I suppose that could be offset a little if they plan ahead and release cropped/resized versions of the backgrounds for HAs to get more mileage out of their work.

The problem was that they weren't part of the HA, they were just stuck behind it and offset. The trees were too big to fit on the forum and you couldn't use HA backgrounds because they overlapped in strange ways. If they made it so you could import your tree into the wardrobe as layer that worked with the HA system I think a lot of people would support that, but shoehorning the trees into the forum where they didn't fit was a mistake.

I like this idea in general.

Simple indoor/outdoor scenes would be nice, but I'd really love to see "regional" outdoor scenes, so you could place your dead tree in the graveyard, etc.
