[item=Reading is Fun! Folder]NATIONAL LIMERICK DAY
National Limerick Day, held every year on May 12, pays homage to the man who made the short poems widespread — Edward Lear (May 12, 1812 – Jan. 29, 1888). Lear was an English poet who is known for his nonsense-style, often writing with made-up words, telling tales of “Quangle-Wangles” and its similars. Edward Lear’s original 1846 opus is called ‘A Book of Nonsense’.
With just five lines, the first two rhyming with the fifth line, and third and fourth lines rhyming together (AABBA rhyming scheme), limericks are quick, funny poems. Most limericks begin by describing a person and place, and then the rest of the lines describe that person’s actions. The Limerick also has a particular rhythm which is officially described as anapestic trimeter.
