Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

Without any context, I'd say the original one, but it depends on their story.

- Color wise, I prefer the original to the updated one. But, like Samurai said, it depends on the pet's story.
Execution wise, there's some coloring outside the lines and the coloring looks a bit uneven. Also, there's a spot in the middle that's still purple instead of cyan. But, it's a good start overall.
I would suggest zooming in when you recolor so it's easier to stay in the lines.
I used GIMP for the second recolor and FireAlpaca for the first one.
I think the color of the second one is off. But I'm still learning GIMP, so I couldn't figure out how to zoom in.

- I don't have GIMP, but I looked up to see if there is a zoom tool. There is one:
Usually, if you have a question about a program, you can find an answer online. There's also tutorials that can help you learn how to use GIMP. c:
I know that. I looked up a GIMP tutorial to help me do the new recolor. :)

GIMP is a paain!! :o I agree that the one you made in FireAlpaca look much better!! What is it that you're trying to do exactly? Maybe I can help out!

Just practicing recoloring. I may start doing overlays later.
Funny thing, the older recolor was done by painstakingly running over the image with a paintbrush (by mouse). 😆

You can probably achieve the same effect by doing the coloring in another layer and then messing with the layer blending mode property! (in Firealpaca)
Or selecting the part you wanna recolor and messing with the hue/saturation
