I would like to see this item's name changed to 'Orca Whale Towel' or just 'Orca Towel'. It's not good to perpetuate the stereotype of orcas as being killers. Yes, they kill seals and such, but that is their nature and right. They should not be called killers, because that perpetuates peoples' idea that they kill human beings for pleasure, which they do not. This myth has lead to many orcas being killed themselves.

I know this might seem like a small thing, but if we don't start change with small things, how else will it start?

Turtle eat jellyfishes. They kill too. Humans do too and yet we aren't called 'killers' out of the blue.

I agree. Let's bring back a more neutral name.

It's... not perpetuating a stereotype. It's the actual name of the animal. They're not called killer whales for shits and giggles, or because they've killed people. They're called that because they occasionally kill and eat whales.

Because of their fierce reputation, orca are sometimes called the Ballena asesina ("assassin whale") by the Spanish. They were referred to as "whale killers" by sailors who witnessed their attacks on larger cetaceans, and over time this name was changed to "killer whales." They are called this not because they harm humans but because they do sometimes kill other whales, hunting them in packs thereby earning the title "Wolves of the Sea."

English-speaking scientists most often use the term "killer whale", although the term "orca" is increasingly used. Killer whale advocates point out it has a long heritage. Indeed, the genus name Orcinus means "of the kingdom of the dead",[10] or "belonging to Orcus".[11] Ancient Romans originally applied orca (plural orcae) to these animals, possibly borrowing it from the Greek ὄρυξ, which referred (among other things) to a whale species. Since the 1960s, "orca" has steadily grown in popularity; both names are now used. The term "orca" is euphemistically preferred by some to avoid the negative connotations of "killer",[12] and because, being part of the family Delphinidae, the species is more closely related to other dolphins than to whales.[13]

According to some authors, the name killer whale is a mistranslation of the 18th century Spanish name asesina-ballenas which means literally whale killer.[14] Basque whalers would have given it such name after observing pods of orcas hunting baleen whales.

In all their ferociousness, they&;ve been dubbed wolves of the sea, whale killers, killing demons and fish tigers, to name a few [source: National Geographic, PBS]. Their scientific name, Orcinus orca, comes from the mythical Orcus -- the Roman god of death and the underworld, who was also known as a punisher [source: Britannica]. In North America, the indigenous Haida call them skana, which is a killer demon. The Aleut people call them polossatik, which means "feared one" [source: Roberts].

I'm not fussed about renaming it - either way is fine with me. But, like... maybe research instead of making assumptions?

I'm not really seeing any reason to rename it because like, as said it's not really perpetuating any actual harmful stereotype???

I honestly see no reason that it needs to be changed (but I would have no objection to "Killer Whale" getting changed to "Orca" either)

I wouldn't be against changing this item's name simply because all of the other items on the site involving this animal use the term "Orca" in their names. So for me, it would be more of a consistency thing rather than the name being bad, but anyway.

Words are living things and how its perceived by the general populace is more important than what it says in the dictionary/encyclopedia. Killer whales are perceived as killers of people (and cute things like seals and other dolphins), no matter that the original meaning was a killer of whales.

That said, personally, I'm not invested in either changing it or keeping it. I don't think "orca whale" is correct though. Keep it as is, or change it to "Orca Towel" or "Whale Towel."

If we want to get even more pedantic, they aren't even whales, they're dolphins.
