This is so awesome! I like opening multiple windows while browsing Subeta on my laptop and oftentimes try to 'hide' the sidebar to maximize the amount of space on my small screen. No more! And it works on my smartphone, too!

I didn't know this was even possible, but it is much appreciated. Thank you a million times over :D

I don't know how much I'll really use this, but it is an interesting new addition. I'm wondering if it's just part of a bigger site layout change to come, I know they've said before that they were planning on some major updates after getting some other things out of the way (like the PHP update probably).

It'll be interesting to see what any new layout design ends up looking like, if that's part of what this is.

[edit]For anyone else who may want to block it with CSS -toggle-button {display: none;}

I theoretically like the idea, but where it's located messes with the navigation tabs if you use Subeta on half your screen (like to have something side-by-side with it). So CSS is nice in that I can turn it off! :D

Oh yeah, I see what you mean. It also affects the quest navigation pretty severely. Not sure what could be done to mitigate that, though.

Thanks for the CSS! I didn't know they were planning on updating the site layout. That'll be a change to adapt to considering the site has looked like this since I joined :P

Yeah, it would take some getting used to for sure. I wouldn't mind too much though if the site's functionality stays somewhat/mostly the same, like still being able to do regular things without too much of a hassle (quests, dailies, bookmarks, etc.).

I know a lot of the code for the site is getting ancient in terms of computer stuff, and it could use a bit of a makeover. I don't even know how far away a change of that magnitude would be anyway though, I just know it's been mentioned before as something that would likely be happening at some point. I was just kind of speculating if this new addition had anything to do with it, but it could be unrelated.

Yeah, I understand not wanting to speculate too much since we don't know their timetable for things and big changes often come as a surprise. Still, I would like to see the site layout, especially the sidebar, more 'streamlined' to match the other small changes they've made over the years. I'm not quite sure what that would look like, but I'm open to it :P

thank you! It’s nice on my desktop, but I can’t always use it and on my tablet the button screws up the dropdown tabs.

I'm not sure what I think of it yet, since I rely on the information on my sidebar for notes and cash on hand. 😭 Maybe a trial run will help me determine if I have enough use for it.

Since I also have Subeta only take up part of my screen, I did some messing around with the Toggle's code to place it out of the way of the navigation tabs and postcard in my theme: -toggle-button { position: absolute; left: 360px; top: -30px;} I tried to place it over the postcards, but from what I could tell, the coding just wasn't possible unless I wanted the entire menu bar on top of the cards. 😒 For CustomCSS arrangements where the postcards are removed though, it sits pretty nicely just above the Subeta logo on the side when this code's Left attribute is removed/reduced.

It's very thrown-together, but maybe it'll help someone. xD Unless somebody else has posted a similar code already.. then oops.

While we do have a completely new design we want to move to eventually, we're starting out by evolving the current layout a bit. This will include both small changes (like the Toggle Sidebar button), small fixes (like the glitched background problem, sidebar getting cut off on some pages, the header/dropdown buttons acting weird on narrow screens, and problems with the page jumping), and a couple bigger changes that we'll probably make posts/announcements for.

Please feel free to ask me any questions you have about future layout changes :) I generally can't answer questions about timeline (it's hard to estimate!) but I can try to answer any other questions you have. Just be aware that the nature of this means a lot of it is figured out as we go - for instance, we may start with a great idea, but realize while implementing it that it won't work as well as we thought, or that some other option is just better.

Thank you for the css fix to remove the toggle!

I really like the sidebar toggle option, but when viewing Subeta on mobile it completely borks the layout. I'm not sure if you guys can find a way to move/adjust the placement so people using smaller or split screens can keep the option to toggle it without having to fight to find links etc because it's shifted them out of placement. If not, I understand, it's just not going to be a feature a chunk of people can use for awhile.

- I know some of you use mobile browsing and if you scroll up to the second post, there's a css that can remove the toggle bar so it doesn't affect site browsing anymore for you

What do you mean? This is the view on an iPhone 8 for instance, and it's clickable and functional there:

If the issue is with the navigation dropdown buttons, yeah... those buttons are a problem haha. They behave weirdly in general and they're also written with a library we need to get rid of (PrototypeJS). They'll be rewritten with Bootstrap/jQuery and made to behave in a much more reasonable way on narrower screens. (So like right now, if the screen is too narrow, they kinda slide downwards on the page and get in the way of everything and are also hard to click. That's one big thing we're going to fix.)

That's what I mean - it moves two of the drop down menus (and gets occasionally partially covered by one of them). It makes it difficult to use those menus or to use links on oaged where they generate in that same general space just below the toggle sidebar button.

On my Kindle, it shoves the Subeta dropdown out of the top bar, which cuts the billboard ad in half (as in, makes it half the size and squished up to the left), and breaks the New News banner. It was four times the size thanks to the words being on four lines now.

On some pages I can't seem to use the button - on the news page, in particular, it's working very inconsistently and takes me back to the news page. I just had it happen on the Subeautique page, too.

Actually, on further investigation, I think the first 2/3rds of the button are being covered by the link back in the header (just on Firefox on my desktop).

It's a cool idea, though!

I really like the look of this and the site seems faster. I just wish the toggle text could be it's own tab at the top. Having it hang down or overlap part of the picture with custom CSS isn't very pretty.

- I dunno how to fix some of those issues either. I can certainly see where hiding the sidebar would be useful though, especially for those with relatively small screen or who play on mobile.

- So here,s a random question, if/when a new layout is pushed, will there still be an option of CustomCSS? I don't mean like.. CustomCSS to make it look like the old one (I'm all for new), but you know, custom colors are nice! :D

I've been playing around with it for a bit (had to move it somewhere I could click it first) and I didn't really notice a speed increase in pageloads while questing after hiding the sidebar. Then again Firefox Quantum seems to be more keen on devouring available memory than anything else, so...

It's kind of making me apprehensive about the new layout and the removal of widgets that was mentioned several times. :/ Live events are already dead because of server load.

Are there going to be improvements to the dashboard to make up for the lack of widgets, or something? Something like a customizable summary page that lets you know what new stuff is going on, who's online, ping history, etc. without it cluttering the whole layout and being displayed with every pageload. A single page with widgets, if you will. Or has the idea of widget removal been scrapped altogether?
