I like mostly young adult but I have read a couple of adult books. Only one I can think of off the top of my head is The Lovely Bones.
I like: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Raven Cycle, dystopian fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, books about murders and or mysteries. I also like The Hunger Games, L.J Smith's The Forbidden Game, Ready Player One and books full of geeky references. xD I don't like romance books much. But if it's not the main focus then it's okay.
If you have any suggestions please let me know ^^
If you haven't already read it, read the Earthsea series by Ursula Le Guin. She just died, and there is going to be a lot of reading of her works in celebration of her life and influence on a generation of fantasy and science fiction readers and writers. So it's a good time to pick it up. The whole series is really good, and while each book has its resemblances to other books you may find or may have already read, as a whole the series is like nothing else.
If you already read the Earthsea series, but not anything else by her, try Lathe of Heaven (dystopian in a really unusual way, science fiction) or a book published under two different titles, "The Beginning Place" and "Threshold" (fantasy/fantastical, dystopia-like).
I recommend the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown for dystopian YA fiction. :)
Don't know if you're still looking for recommendations, but:
For mystery I always recommend 'We Were Liars' by E. Lockhart, it is very short and you fly through it.
I second the recommendation of 'Red Rising', adding that they are not strictly YA, and only the first book can really be thought of as within that genre (you will definitely like the first book if you like the Hunger Games. Very Star Wars as well).
'Red Queen' by Victoria Aveyard, anything by V.E. Schwab ('Vicious' is amazing if you have a soft spot for villains), 'Illuminae' by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman, 'Blame' by Simon Mayo, 'Three Dark Crowns' by Kendare Blake.
I will stop now since that's already a lot, but hopefully some of them will interest you!
I'd recommend Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. It's the first book in a dystopian/scifi trilogy. It's adult rather than YA but I think if you enjoy dystopian YA, you'd enjoy this. Also Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel and Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller.
I just finished Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi today (I got an advanced reader copy, it will be published on Tuesday, March 6) and I cannot recommend the book enough. It's YA fantasy that draws from West African lore, and has elements that reminded me a bit of Lord of the Rings with an epic quest. This book delves into the act of growing up and reconciling what one has been taught growing up with how they perceive the world. Faith and in believing in yourself. Power. How power corrupts. Important themes for YA (and arguably for everyone since as an adult these themes still resonate with me).
I was drawn into the narrative with the first words that my eyes took in; the story is instantly engaging and poetically written. The story unfolds at a masterful pace, Adeyemi brings the reader into the world of Orïsha both all at once and slowly, satisfying an unknown craving for more lore while dropping breadcrumbs along the way for more. I can see this book and subsequent series being adapted for film and being as impactful for this generation as Harry Potter was for mine.
