I started to get back into art and would love a nice place to post it.
I have no idea where people post stuff nowadays. I used to use DeviantArt but it has basically become terrible. Is there an alternative to DeviantArt? I have still started uploading my stuff to DeviantArt but there's not much activity and I hate the new Browse features and can't seem to find any new artists to follow. >:(
Not super interested in Tumblr but you may be able to convince me to open up an art Instagram (I already have two accounts anyway hahaha)..
Thoughts? :)
I'm sort of in the same boat and I'm using dA, twitter and tumblr. Though I'm not in touch with the community, I seem to get a lot more traffic on dA than I do on either of the other two. Possibly because it logs pageviews (giving more of an illusion of activity), or because it is just more active in general. I don't know about dA getting terrible, is it any worse than it ever was? I've been away from it for years and only recently returned. I think your idea about Instagram is correct. I don't use it myself but I feel like I see a lot of other artists using it, and it seems like it could be conducive to discovering art and artists (from what I can tell it just loads in more posts based on a tag? Thus delivering the viewer more art posts). That's what I gather, anyway.
I feel like I've seen a lot of new apps and such for posting art on, but I can't say I'm convinced they have the staying power of something like dA or pixiv and so on. After all these years online I feel like the best way to go about is to use a website as a hub and just crosspost your art on whatever platforms come along? Those are my thoughts, though I'm sure someone else has a better idea of what platforms are new and worth posting to nowadays.
I'm in the same boat - I've let my own website lapse, I do have IG and Tumblr, and a dA - I don't really like posting on dA that much though. I do wonder if there's an actual art site alternative.
There's a ton of artist activity on Instagram -- I keep a separate account for my artwork vs. my personal stuff. Check out etc... there's even more stuff once things like MerMay and Inktober happen!
I heard Twitter is a good place that's active as well and I'm going to try that one out together with instagram because DA and Tumblr is not active at all. (Tumblr what happend?!)
I follow more artists on Instagram and tumblr than anywhere else...I know there's a workaround to post to Instagram from the desktop than just shuffling your art to a mobile device and uploading it.
Tumblr is horrible, their new way of showing content now only seems to show blogs already popular. I'm not the best artist, but a few times I've managed to break the ceiling I've done well. But most of my art is just never seen.
Right now the site WritScrib is in beta, it's a site that's geared towards artists of all kinds (writing, visual, music, etc) and actually has a in site way to tip us (buy chips at 10 cents a piece and you can tip posts, once at a min amount you can withdraw them). It's the most promising thing I've seen though its very rough right now. There's a discord you can follow for more details.
I have my own site and I post on DA, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram but I prefer Twitter because you can interact with people more I feel.
Is this still active? Mastodon.art is a rather small but pretty cool community, where people actually respond when you write them and it's more about fun than fame :)
Artstation (professional work) Instagram (doodles and food) Ello (process work and paintings)

I follow most of my artists on tumblr, but it's so easy to miss their posts if you follow a bunch of people. So I agree with most of the people on here. IG seems to be the best place to see artists posts!
I haven't noticed a huge change in dA personally! But it does seem like a lot of people are migrating from there to tumblr. ;/ It can be kind of difficult to get used to at first, and I totally understand not being super into the site, but that's where I see most people going if they're interested in sharing their art and getting commissions in particular!
At my university (I am majoring in Art History and Studio Art) I spoke to so many other artists who definitely say Instagram is the best place to be. Instagram will give you the ability to showcase "sneak peaks" if you're gonna be working on comics while also allowing you to post photos of more traditional works like oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, etc. while letting you post up to 10 photos, you can then include close up shots! You are going to, ideally, want to make a website though. Consider an etsy if you are selling your work, or looking into options like google sites, which would be through their Google Drives. In your bio on Instagram, you can place links to the various shops or sites you also showcase your work. I would recommend tumblr for something like comics.
So short answer: use as many sites as you see fit, depending on your audience! Things to keep in mind: Instagram allows you to make multiple accounts if you desire to keep your personal life separate from the art you show. But Instagram also gives you the ability to show "behind the scenes" or "in progress" shots without cluttering anything up.
My communications professor this semester actually said that statistically, Instagram is the most popular social media site right now. So, if you're concerned with making sure your artwork will potentially be seen by more people, then I would say Instagram is the place to go. However, it has a lot of flaws as well, and a big one I've heard about recently is one of their newer algorithms. It can be a very good site for artists though, and I know a lot of them that have one, so if you're interested in the site I would recommend reading some kind of guide in order to make the most of it. Some people even set up queues of their posts so that they are released during the highest traffic periods.
Oof, that got soo long-winded, my bad. 😅 But, yea, in short, definitely read some kind of guide if you want to join. Personally, I don't post my art anywhere much anymore, but I do follow a lot of artists that I like on Twitter and Tumblr.

I've definitely embraced Instagram! My art insta is not so updated but I do use it for other stuff. I guess in regards to art I'm not doing it enough for me to upload more.
For anyone curious my art instagram is the same as my deviantart: yingmakes
I upload my stuff to Fur Affinity and Twitter, and the handy thing about FA is thst they have a SFW mode. Twitter seems to a little better at sharing stuff, but that's also something that can vary pretty wildly.
