I'm new to the battling scene, and I was just wondering why when I healed at the healer, my health went up, but my HP stayed the same i.e. 11/161.

Are you still in a battle? When you enter battle with less than full HP, the Healer will say you can be healed and take your sP, but won't actually heal you. If you want to be healed properly, you need to exit any battles first and then go to the Healer.

, it was after I had won. So, should I start a battle, then exit to go to the healer?

Can you see what I mean? I battled, but because my HP wouldn't go above 11 for some reason, I lost and have no HP left, even though my health is at 161 after the healer.

- make sure that you have exited the battle - not just won. When you finish a battle there is a red Game Over button on the screen. Make sure that you have clicked that before you try to heal. If you aren't sure whether you might still be stuck in a battle you can go to the Challenge Screen. If you are still in a battle, you'll see a big pink banner up near the top with a link that allows you to continue that battle and a second link that allows you to forfeit. After ending the battle, you should have no problem healing.

- I never knew the healer would take your sP and not heal your pet if you are battling but you are right, that's exactly what happens. Wow - seems like this is a bug that should at be fixed (and there should at least be a warning note on the Healer page if it can't be fixed quickly). Is this an error that has been reported to staff?
