I suppose this might be a question/suggestion.
Is there anything in place for if a Mysterious Melody doesn't gift anything back to you? I know that there are random gifting mechanics on the site.. maybe if there isn't anything in place already, it would be good to add something where if you don't receive anything by the time MM resets, then you get an automated sort of thing.
Has this happened to anyone yet?
What about a mechanic where if you've joined, sent at least 1 item, and received nothing in return, you can request to rejoin the MM pool after 6 hours or so. Perhaps the negligent partner wouldn't be able to rejoin til the next calendar day.
So there isn't really a penalty for the "missing" partner, as they can rejoin on the new day. (Because things do come up.) But folks who want to be active can have another chance at that.
This is a frequent complaint for MM, either getting nothing, or a few junk items only.
I don't know if there is any good way to police it. Especially since there's an achievement, people who can't afford it will sign up anyway. Also, I'm not sure what's it like now, but years ago when I last played, I didn't intend to sign up, I was just clicking around to see what it was about and signed up by accident. I still sent gifts, but others might not feel the same way.
The usual suggestion is to send a nice, but not too expensive gift then wait to see if you get a response. Yeah, its frustrating if you don't and you "waste" a day, but I guess its better than sending a bunch of stuff and getting nothing back.

Sending an automated gift isn't a bad idea, but it is kind of sad (and it doesn't really solve the issue of some people just sending stuff they had cluttering their inventory.)
I actually just went and checked the page, and there isn't even a mention of time on it. This is all it says:
Nothing says your MM resets at midnight or that it only lasts a day. I know it's probably not hard to figure that out, but I'm wondering if that main page might not just need an overhaul. Say how long it is, give little suggestions on the types of items you can send (stuff that doesn't have to be expensive but maybe sends a message) really ENCOURAGE participation.
Also, it links to the gift center, which is completely useless for MM. MAYBE that should also be overhauled, attach it to MM, and make it so it functions the same, but the item is sent to your current MM. People do like to gamble.
sorry i kinda hijacked your suggestion i just took a peek at noticed this and i wonder if it contributes at least somewhat to dud MMs.
The gift center actually already does that, that's why it's linked in the MM page. You can chose a random amount of sp and your MM will get an item of the same value, from their wishlist if possible =)
hmm. I only see a broken image and a place to put in a username. I guess it changes if you're actually entered in MM?
i been here like 13 years i still don't know shit
That kind of info should probably be put on the main MM page regardless, though.
Yes, when you enter you also get the option to send to your MM, I use it quite often =D
- I've been here so long and I still don't know some neat features too! haha :)
- I'll have to try out that gift center thing, I like the sound of that.
I don't mind it when people send along things from their inventory, "junk" or not. At least they're participating. I remember the first year I joined MM I had a grand old time with one stranger sending along themed items. They would send me something cheap with the word "Raspberry" in the title and I would send back something "Orange". We kept it going for quite a while without doubling up on items! I thought it was a wonderful laugh. This was way before you could send messages along with gifts so we communicated with thank you bears and other items with "notes"
