collect-a-thon platformers are my favorite genre of video game and i want to share the love! spyro the dragon, banjo-kazooie, and ty the tasmanian tiger are some faves. what are your favorites in the genre? are there some little-known gems from your childhood you can recommend? i'm always clamoring for more games like this, even moreso now that they might be heading into a renaissance with the excitement around yooka-laylee, a hat in time, and the crash trilogy remaster.
As a kid I was primarily a Nintendo girl, so I'd say games like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, and shoot even the recent Super Mario Odyssey. I suppose you could argue if some of these Mario titles would count as a collecathon, but I personally think they do. But I'm also a completionist and tend to keep exploring even if I have enough Power Stars/Moons to progress. I hear DK64 is a fantastic collectathon, but I personally have never played it before.
Though when I went to my friend's house and played PS2, I did also enjoy Crash Bandicoot and Sly Cooper (does Sly count? I kind of forget tbh it's been such a long time). I did buy the Crash remaster though since I have a PS4; I just haven't gotten into it yet!
First one that always comes to mind for me is Spyro, which I adore. I'm also a huge fan of Psychonauts, which isn't purely a platformer as it contains a lot of adventure game puzzles too, but it definitely has the collectathon factor. It took me so many years to find all those figments! o.ov
As a kid I mostly lived on Amiga games, and a lot of those platformers have collectables but they don't necessarily keep track of your total amount collected, and instead just have an overall score. Some of my favourites of these were Fire and Ice, Superfrog, and the James Pond series.
I missed out on the Banjo-Kazooie games as a kid, but I really want to play them! Especially as I have played (and love) Yooka-Laylee.
The platformer I'm concentrating on at the moment is Ori and the Blind Forest, which is not a hardcore collectathon but it is very open-world and does contain quite a lot of collectables (and secrets!) and it's a game I would like to 100% someday. I'm coming towards the end of my first playthrough at the moment and I'm not convinced I'm going to get a perfect score on this run. I do plan to replay it quite a bit though to get some Steam achievements I couldn't get first time round! :D
I've not played A Hat in Time yet but definitely plan to. It looks brilliant!
