I'm just wondering, for those of you who enjoy reading poetry, what can you recommend? I'm mainly looking for suggestions for my friend who did her masters in creative writing: poetry. The two of us write together all the time and workshop, and I thought for Christmas I'd buy her some books of poetry that she wouldn't normally read as a way to help expand her horizons.

She reads a lot of George Elliott Clarke, Lucas Crawford, Ali Blythe, Kayla Czaga, and Laisha Rosnau for contemporary. For classic writers, she likes John Donne, Sylvia Plath, and Emily Dickinson.

I'm also going to buy her a novel or two, but I'll pick those from my favourites as I'm more familiar with authors than poets. (I'm a bad poet that needs to read more poetry smacks self)

Thanks!!

My four favourite poets are:

-Sherman Alexie (a Native American poet, does a lot of really gorgeous prose poetry)

-Anne Carson (in particular her novel, Autobiography of Red, which pulls from Greek mythology)

-Louise Gluck (I love pretty much all of her stuff, it's so hauntingly beautiful)

-Patricia Smith (her novel, Blood Dazzler, is about Hurricane Katrina)
