I don't post on the forums much but I had an idea and wanted to share it in case anyone else thought it would be interesting.
I'm a huge pathfinder and DND player and I love RPG type games. On Neopets they used to have a fun Final Fantasy style game where you could level your character and it had like a point and click overworld map.
I'd love it if Subeta developed a similar game that was like a DND style RPG game. I know we have Mazes & Mahars, but that's a card game.
Maybe this has been suggested before, or maybe it's a dumb idea, but if anyone else thinks it could be fun or has ideas I'd love to hear them, haha!
As a FF player myself, it has potential, but I'm not sure the site could support that without lagging badly. Maybe it could work with a secondary server people can use a portal (say, a spot in Centropolis they can click on) to transfer to the RPG/leveling system? Incentive to go there could be things like chances at getting very rare items or Cash Shop items which aren't available anymore?
Love RPGs. But I really don't think Subeta could support a game like you're discussing.
However, a more text based game like those old "choose your own adventure" books might be possible. To keep it from being too similar to the Crypts or Ice Fields, you could create choices that lead you to play other games/battle/etc that you have to win to progress. You can "level up" as you play, but the games/battle/etc also get harder as you level up. Maybe the choices you take can lead to specific directions - like if you make more aggressive choices, you end up battling more, and if you choose more diplomatic choices, you end up playing more games. Or give three main choices, where the third track is completely random between games and battling.

: Yeah, that was the thing I was worried about, too--Subeta not being able to support it. 'Choose your own adventure' type play may work, especially because the complete randomness in the Crypts and the Ice Fields is so annoying, especially when it kicks you out when you only HAVE one option. If choosing it yourself means you progress as long as you do whatever task it's asking you for, I'd be all for that.
That's the idea. But I'm thinking if you keep progressing, it would have to be like Item Hunt, where you're limited to making only a few choices a day.
I really like the idea of making your choices matter - random button pushing gets so boring! There would still be randomness in terms of exactly which activity happens, but your choice would impose a limit on the type of activity it could be.

: In a sense, it might be better to start with a limit to the levels you can play in a day, somewhere between 5-10 like most of the games. Well, 5 would be like Item Hunt. I also like the idea of having the option to start over if you want to, which would erase your level progress, but you'd keep the items you had already gained. Does Item Hunt let you start back at 0 once it's maxed?
I agree completely with you in saying choices matter! Completely random things start to get pointless and tiring after awhile--the game Random is one thing, since you actually win something regardless, but without that, and for it to go through several screens of 'paths' with nothing to show for it or even something to affect where you're heading to--not so fun.
No, once you finish item hunt you're done. That's one of the reasons I've never made a concerted effort to finish it.
With a game like this - where your choices can change the outcome, I definitely want to be able to replay to make different choices.

item hunt does not let you restart (anymore), because the end reward is a godly weapon - swashbuckle - and staff does not want those flooding the market (again). if this hypothetical text-adventure only gave out food or wearables or no-use items i don't think staff would restrict people from playing again after they win.
that said, i think a text adventure kind of thing could be a fun daily. if it had a few item rewards*, and you had a limited number of levels/moves each day like item hunt, i think it would have good replay value.
: I didn't think IH allowed that, but I wasn't sure. And definitely, yes!
: I think your worries about people farming the paths for the items (I support that option, by the way, as long as the dead end still had something you had to do to earn it, since these paths would be rarer items rather than everyday ones) could be set randomly so you aren't guaranteed to get a path leading to an item. It's sort of like...you would do your task for one level, then the next section of the path from there would be random, so you wouldn't be sure of getting a path leading to an item, or even of what item you'd get while playing. In that regard, you could actually run through a complete game without even getting one of those paths, since the only guarantee would be it leading you to the end, and add to that how some dead-end paths may force you to restart...
Alternately, I guess they could stipulate that you can only find very rare items, say, once a month, regardless of your play.
Of course, I'm not talking about what you win being anything in particular, and the staff could stipulate that some types of items just won't drop or have such a low drop rate that you'd have to play steady for a year to get them, or you just really luck out by getting one early on.
if Subeta had more users interested in battling, I'd love to see our battle system either move towards this format or have a separate branch where you could explore and stuff with your battle pet. I don't think the site would put that much work into something when most users prefer wearables though, since the battling community is relatively small
I love the idea of a text-based game! I still think a top-down rpg could be doable, though. Subeta supports that huge wardrobe, after all!
I love to do battles on Subeta! Id love to have a battle pet incorporated into the game.
i don't doubt that staff could do a neoquest-style game, i just wonder if that would be a good use of resources since it seems like most people are interested in the wardrobe and the pets. though staff has played around with things like minion battling before, so who knows p:
: Maybe it generates a random maze each time you start over? Well, not random, but maybe have, say, 10 different formats for which maze could show up, and not all of them have dead ends, but that particular maze will always be that maze and the dead ends would always be there in that version of the maze? A trial of this would have to be done just to see if there's enough interest in it to make it worth-while, and if there isn't...well, I guess we'd lose it again.
I would love to see either a choose-your-own-adventure text RPG game, or a neoquest style RPG! (A neoquest style RPG would certainly help me, a non battler, get more interested and involved in the battling side of the site!)
they/them/theirs, please.
Subeta used to have a sister site called NeuroGalaxy where we explored a map and our activer pet met up with monsters it could battle etc. It was great fun and I'd love to see something like it for Subeta.
I know it's not likely to happen, but I'd LOVE a Neoquest style game! Neoquest was my favorite thing on neo.
