So, I've had this story idea buzzing around in my head for the last couple weeks, but I'm a bit concerned about the genre.
The story starts off as your typical ghost story. A young girl moves into a new house and soon discovers that she's sharing her room with an unfriendly ghost. But, partway through the story, the girl finds out a bit about her ghost before he died and begins to see him as a person and not just a monster. At this point the story turns more into a supernatural friendship/romance story.
So, I’m concerned that anyone who would want to read the book would be thinking it’s going to be a spooky story based on the beginning and then be disappointed when they find out which direction the story takes.
I’m just curious how people feel about books that seem to switch genres throughout the story. Does it bother you? Do you feel ripped off?

Personally, I think as long as the book is categorized properly/clearly (whether that be through literal categories online or in the blurb on the back), it shouldn't be an issue. If you present it as a paranormal romance the readers will know what to expect. You should be fine if you do something like that. =)
I personally like the idea of these kinds of stories. The story starts with the basic pattern but suddenly there's a twist to the tale. Your story sounds like a ghost-version of Beauty and the Beast. And also like the old Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoons to a degree. I would love to hear the backstory of the ghost, especially if it's well-written!

Thanks, I will keep that in mind and try not to worry so much
Thanks. You know, it's funny, I never even thought of it being kind of like Beauty and the Beast but now that you mention it, I can definitely see the similarities. Beauty and the Beast was always one of my favorites!
