Does anyone else do this?

I did it once with a manga that I really liked the cover of, and I didn't realize until I got home that it was the 2nd volume. Then there was a paperback I did it with that I didn't realize until I started reading it and they didn't introduce the characters at all. Both of those I never actually read, and I never bought the first book.

The only one I've actually read the first book for was the Cirque du Freak series, but I think the reason I read the second book before the first one was because my library didn't have the first one at the time.

I thrift rather frequently and accidentally buying the 2nd/3rd/4th/etc book in a series used to happen to me a lot. (I'll never understand why some publishers only number the books on the inside, rather than on the cover...)

I've gotten better at looking out for those sneaky sequels that don't explicitly state that they're a sequel, but it still occasionally happens to me from time to time lol.

I've done that with a few mangas. But after finding the mistake, I look for the first one to see if I like it, because to me, reading the sequel before the first is too confusing.

I bought Rainbow Rowell's Carry On thinking that I wouldn't need to read the first book since technically they are two separate stories, but turns out that I absolutely can't get into the story now that I know that it's a sequel x)

The same thing happened with Robin Hobb, at first I was under the assumption that all her Realm of the Elderlings -series were separate, and I ended up reading the fourth saga first. Missed a whole bunch of important little things, and spoiled myself a little for the the three previous series, oops.

P sure that also happened with some manga back when I actively read stuff, but I honestly can't remember any titles.
