Is one type of scroll better than the other? Is it okay to just go for the cheapest of the not at all cheap options?
There are a couple of different types of scrolls. There are once per battle scrolls, which you might want to have multiples of, and there are infinite use scrolls which can be used as many times as you want throughout the battle. Usually you want at least one infinite use scroll, so that you always have a scroll to use. There are scrolls that heal, scrolls that deal damage, scrolls that freeze and scrolls that block. Which one you want to use depends on the opponent, how much intelligence your pet has and the situation in the battle.
I always suggest to start out with an infinite use healing scroll. This is helpful in most battles. However, some opponents have healing disabled, or sometimes you might be at full health and don't really need the heal. Then it's nice to have a scroll that deals some damage instead.
Cheaper scrolls are good alternatives if you're not that much into battling. However, the more expensive scrolls are usually a bit better, they heal a little bit more, have a higher freezing chance or deal more damage. So it all depends on how serious you are in battling, and how much intelligence your pet has. For every 16 intelligence, your pet gains one AP. Scrolls take up AP points in order to equip them for battle. Lower AP cost scrolls are usually weaker versions, and are cheaper. There is no use buying a scroll that takes up 16AP if your pet only has 5AP.
Your pet Calliopa for instance has 1086 intelligence, so 67AP to use. There is a very cheap infinite use healing scroll, which heals 15hp each time you use it. It requires 4AP. Another nice healing scroll is the which heals for 5% of your max HP. In your case, that would be 13hp. A bit less than the Champion scroll, but as you gain more stats, then 5% will start to outheal the flat 15hp heal of the Champion scroll. The Divine Denizhen Scroll does not only heal, but it also blocks 3 of every icon, which will help you survive a bit longer. It takes up 7AP, almost double of the Champion scroll, and it's a lot more expensive but in the end much more usefull. The most used infinite use healing scroll by top tier battlers at the moment is probably the with its 7% healing it's not the best healing scroll out there (there are scrolls with 8 or 10% healing), but it does have a quite decent attack and defense, which is quite rare on such healing scrolls.
The is an infinite use healing scroll that doesn't heal, it only deals damage and has a very low chance to freeze. It takes up 8AP. Ofcourse there are other infinite use damage scrolls which are cheaper and use less AP, but they'll probably deal less damage and/or don't have a chance to freeze. There are really tons of options, so it's best to go and check out either the Complete Scroll list or the scroll section of ">The Weapon Guide which I think is a little bit outdated since it hasn't been updated in a while, but most scrolls are still covered here.
The once per battle scrolls are usually those that deal extra damage, freeze or have a large heal. One I can recommend is the which deals 40 icons of damage and heals your pet for 300hp. Look out for this scroll during Morostide, as it drops from one of the challengers, so it will most likely drop in price then. It takes up 15AP. One of the once per battle scrolls that can freeze your opponent is the which requires 7AP. There are other scrolls that have a higher freeze chance, such as the and . These require 16 and 15AP respectively. They are a lot more expensive and require double the AP of the Perilous Whirlpool, but their chance to freeze is also much higher. You can make do with the cheaper scroll, but at some point you might want to upgrade to the better scrolls. Most people start out with the cheaper ones, and then upgrade as they go. As your pet gains more stats, you can beat bigger opponents and win scrolls yourself.
Thank you so much for this information and for your thoroughness <3 Im about to go through the list and guide you provided, as well. Im hoping they include an explanation of AP. Like, does it get eaten up or can it be recovered by removing a scroll from a set. I will look into the scrolls you suggested too! That was so helpful to have a full explanation for you recommendations. Thank you!
You're welcome :D
AP doesn't get eaten. So you can always remove scrolls from your scroll set to free up space for another one. You can try different combinations and go for the combination that suits you best for the situation you are in. For example, usually I use at least one infinite healer scroll, but now with the Hydragellos boss battle I removed it, since the Hydragellos hits so hard that I have no chance to heal up. Instead I equipped freezing scrolls to prevent me from getting any damage at all for the next turn.
My list isn't really complete since there are so many scrolls to choose from. There are scrolls for nearly any AP range you like, and maybe you want to use different scrolls depending on the opponent that you fight. Some notable scrolls for defense are the once per battle scrolls and which both block a ton of icons. This can be very handy for preventing damage which you wouldn't be able to block with your weapons or which you wouldn't be able to outheal. They almost function as a full block in some cases. Ofcourse there are other scrolls that only defend against one icon type, like the which has a 75 icon magma defense, and deals 12-15 magma damage. So it all depends on the situation, therefore it's best to look at a scroll list and pick something based on what you need to defeat an opponent and the amount of AP you have available. Most standard is to have one infinite use healing scroll, maybe an infinite use attacking scroll (or combined like the Aftershocks), some freezing scrolls and some defensive scrolls like the Cobalt Eternal and Sancturia Exodin. Gift of the Forj is pretty popular too, with its 1500hp heal can be like a full heal for pets up to tier 8 or 9.
