Wolf and Bear

A silver wolf pup, Bounding through the forest, The wind rustling branches and leaves, Warm temperatures fill on Spring’s brink.

A path opening to a clearing, Blooming wildflowers and shrubs, The pup brakes to a halt and howls, Out of the foliage reveals a bear cub.

Both young beings play, Evading each other in a game of tag, Trampling over grass and flowers, Living each day like the last.

Days turn to months, And months to years, The wolf started forgetting, Forgotten tracks fading in the dirt.

The bear waited, and waited, Recognizing the wolf’s scent in the air, The air, now cold, The night, now darker.

Days turn to months, And months to years, Sad howls echo every night, The sound of mental torment.

The path of familiarity with the bear, Humid temperatures fill on Spring’s brink, Blooming wildflowers and shrubs, Living each day, like the last.

A sad howl echoes, Waking the bear from his afternoon nap, His friend, his wolf, Stands in front of him, waiting.

Evading each other in a game of tag, Trampling over grass and flowers, Splashing into a puddle, To see the reflections of torment, On the wolf and bear.

Living each day like the last.

Oh man... it started out so cute, but at the end it got so dark. I don't know if my interpretation is correct, but I took it to mean the bear and wolf were friends when they were little, but by the end of the poem, the wolf is hunting the bear because it needs to.

The tone of your poem, something about the words you use, made it sound like an old storybook - a little bit magical.

Thanks for sharing.

Not necessarily, by the end, both of them are playing again, but they do see each other's 'scars' of loneliness and problems.
