Has anyone ever actually thought of having a school for pets to attend in place of jobs? I have at least one Pet I'd really rather enroll in school rather than having her working or being 'Unemployed' on the employment page.
This is sort of how I see it: -School would be a permanent enrollment unless the user removes the Pet from it (like jobs) -It wouldn't give income, but it would change the Pet's employment status to 'In school' or 'Going to school' -Pets enrolled could have a small chance of gaining a random Intelligence point (the Subeta Team could obviously decide that ratio, but the point would still be that it would be easier and faster to raise a Pet's Intelligence by reading them books) -A new job posting for the Job Agency would be to help at the school (janitorial/teaching/etc.)
If anyone else would be interested in this for any of their pets, feel free to add to this, or help refine it! I'd really like to know if anyone else thinks it could be a good idea or if I should forget about it.
hmm, could be interesting. i think it could work as a job, so different levels of schooling would make up the different job levels - preschool, kindergarten, grade school, junior high, high school, college, grad school - and then maybe an additional job path for school staff / educators / etc. it could be cool to have the appropriate level of schooling displayed as your pet's "employment" instead of a job if they are a student.
... Anyone else got Neoschools flashbacks?
That aside... No, I'm not really sold on this idea. :( It would make it possible to get free intel points indefinitely (stick a pet in and forget about it). More intel points = more AP for scrolls and battling. Even if it's just one intel point per 7 days, it would still have serious potential to break things.
I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a job for a teacher or a student position in the job agency with ranks going up from preschool all the way up, but I don't think we really need a whole new system for the sake of a bit more immersion.
I don't see why it couldn't be exactly like a job - you get an "allowance" instead of a paycheck. You collect daily, like any other job, to get your allowance and a small chance of stat increase.
As to 's objection - you wouldn't just "stick a pet in and forget about it" you'd have to collect daily like any other job, or you don't get any stats. It wouldn't unbalance things anymore than jobs already do.

Having to collect it is still basically doing next to nothing and having a decent chance of getting specifically free intel for it. :x Maybe I read too far into the suggestion, I don't know, but that's the way it struck me.
I can appreciate wanting more immersion, don't get me wrong, but I don't really see this working out as anything except a couple of job agency listings.
If the site is cutting down on duplicate things and site features that didn't get much interest (auctions, journals, merging the pet zappers), why add another feature that only differs from the job agency in the way it's worded and the stat it gives out? It doesn't make much sense to me.
I kinda like this idea just because, from a character-building standpoint, not all of our OCs are working or unemployed - I myself have some pets that are school-age and would be going to school rather than thinking about work. So it would definitely be nice to have that option on the profile.
I think it could work extremely similar to jobs. Every day you click a button that says "Go To Class!" to collect daily just like income for jobs. However, in addition to the rare +1 intelligence, I was thinking sP doesn't make much sense Allowance sort of makes sense but we don't usually get free money from school. But it would make sense to have our pets come home with new books or school supplies. So my idea is, every day you get a free item which is a random restockable. It could be a random item from Book Nook or Thimbl & Co, for instance. Or maybe it's just a random book from any of the main shops. Staff could weight this by rarity so that it doesn't give out super rare items too often. And I don't think this would upset the economy if it's just one free item a day. But it would end up being an interesting alternative to jobs.

I think the jobs already kinda cover this idea, for the most part anyways.
I wouldn't mind seeing like, idk.. a "Skill school" aspect to jobs? Like, they released new jobs for some of more skilled NPCs (ex" Fantine, Mathis, Asmodeus, etc) but instead of the jobs relying on just stats/intel it also required a skill level? It could be set up literally like Fantine's bakery thingy is regarding your skil level and what task you want to do, only a set limit per day, that involves your active pet, and depending on what trade skill thingy you were training would depend on the tasks they asked your pet to do. It could be set up as simple as the bird watching/bug finding things, too. Like Mathis wants you to go find dark ore. So go to darkside and refresh a lot until you get the floater, etc.
Then again I'd just prefer it if we had more neat things to do with our pets? And if you had to be like, skill level 50 to get the job and could only do so many per day/had to do so many to advance to the next, it'd be like a goal to work towards or something.
Wow, this generated some decent discussion and some good ideas or options to work with! I'm happy about that. :D
Obviously, anything the system did or didn't give would be up to the Subeta Team, but I was thinking of the random rare Intellect point because you go to school to learn things, which means getting smarter--or increasing your intellect. I would agree a lot more with a random handout of a book or school-related item way more than an 'allowance', definitely.
: Something like the skill jobs for training would be a separate thing in my mind, though, because that's something an 'adult' Pet who would usually be working would do--it's a good idea, but my point in the Pet school is because I have a 'baby' Pet I feel really odd about having in a work position and just annoyed by having her do nothing when she's a kid and wouldn't just be doing 'nothing' all day. It's not like there's a place we can send Pets to play for an hour or two, and to me, kids go to school.

In seriousness though, they could just make student a job with 0 income (or negative). Jobs already give stats.

I'd go one more on what said and say that tuition increases the more "schooling" you want to claim for your pet so it's an increasingly negative income. Getting more negative the higher in rank that you get so your pet will become at the end a starving post-grad or an homeless adjunct professor
: I could see a zero income or negative income in a sense, but I don't think the Pet could ever be a 'starving' or a 'homeless' anything because we're the ones taking care of/feeding the Pet, so it's using our income, not theirs. I mean, since anything they make, or don't, is given to (or taken from) us, not the Pet directly...
:D In different circumstances, that would be really funny, though!
we are also the ones homeschooling them by reading them books, using boosters on them, and playing mystic spindles so ??? This job and it's titles are for the lulz.
There is an additional burden put upon the college level student, and starving and homeless represent this. Perhaps "overworked TA postgrad" and "threadbare adjunct professor"?
: That could work. Overworked and threadbare are easy to become in Subeta. O.O
I really like this idea. And Overworked / Threadbare are awesome! I also like the SP negative too, I mean going to school is all about money these days. Getting items when upping a level might be nice too. - Like the Mystery box style random - You'll need this for the next level but it will cost you 2000 sp. - (-_- just like college)?

: Thanks for saying! Getting other input has been really helpful in giving the idea form, and yes, even if you'd start in, like, preschool, there could definitely be levels right up to college and university! Thanks for adding to the discussion!
I like the idea of having a job based around school and school titles- but in terms of payout, what about by attending, the pet gets an "allowance" or "lunch money".
It doesn't have to be a huge payout - some of the jobs already pay peanuts - but it would be a slight net gain instead of a net loss, and would make people with school-based character pets happy.
Edit: Ahaha, Lypsyl already mentioned this exact idea above. YEAH, WHAT SHE SAID.
: I still favor having a zero increase or decrease in income, but you get a random school-related item instead. The item can then be sold if you want. Or a minor decrease in income, which would usually be compensated for by the item--because like it or not, school doesn't PAY YOU MONEY, it TAKES IT AWAY.
It almost sounds like another version of the Resort, in that case.
I'm skeptical about school-related items, only because I remember Keith saying in times past (darned if I can remember where or when, though) that they're a little lukewarm on adding yet more event items to the site because they just deflate so fast.
It's a neat idea either way, though, and I'm not sold on whichever mechanism. Just that I think it would be neat to see for people who have school-related pet characters.
Honestly, I'd be contented with a job named "student" with no income and funny titles. C: (But if it were ever to become a larger feature of its own, I wouldn't mind either. XD)
🐝 Permanently working on my pets 🐝
: I think the idea for the items was that they would be random existing restockables--like very common books, water colors or oil crayons, notebooks, pens--there are a lot of existing items which would be used in a school room. I could see a Pet coming home with a Basic Math book or a blue pencil. :D
: Funny titles FTW! :D
