I'm trying to develop my digital arts skill. I've been told I'm a great drawer....using pencil and paper of course. I'm trying to find some free painting/drawing software to get my feet wet with digital art but I'm so lost. Any suggestions?

P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong area.

Gimp is a good free alternative to Photoshop, it has basically all the same power and functionality, it will take some time to learn though. (I don't think interface is as good.)

I have heard really good things about Inkscape, but haven't used it myself. It is apparently great for vector art. You might wanna check that out.

Good luck!

I used to swear by GIMP, but then it started giving me fits while using a digital pen tablet and I had to abandon it because I couldn't get it to do what I wanted anymore. I ended up moving to a program known as Krita (website here, if you'd like to see more about it), which is built on the same skeleton as GIMP, to my understanding, but I like it a lot more. I've little experience with it, admittedly, but I've enjoyed it what little I have used it, though the UI took a bit of getting used to; it's more elegant than GIMP, in my opinion, and works quite beautifully with my Intuos.

MyPaint is really good - I'd say it's pretty comparable to SAI. Pretty easy to learn and has a clean interface too! http://mypaint.org/downloads/

I highly suggest FireAlpaca. It's completely free and always updating. I did the overlay for my leashed pet on it!

I'd suggest Krita. I used that software to do a couple illustrations and it semmed to be really efficient and easy to use. Also, there are plenty of tutorials on how to use it.

Paint Tool SAI is not free, but I think it might be the best option if you're new to digital art. It is very lightweight and intuitive, though a little too simplistic if you want to do some advanced adjustments to your art. You could use the free trial just to become acquainted to art softwares and then move to Krita. Just a suggestion. :^)

I came here just to suggest Krita, as said. I haven't used it myself, but it's free and I've seen some good art produced with it =3

I will always recommend Krita, but I do have two other programs I've used that are pretty okay!

Medibang Paint is a free program that has a lot of promise! I used the app on my iPhone sometimes, and it was great. You can also save your canvases on your phone and pick them up on your computer, or vice versa! That was a really awesome feature for me. It's pretty useful for manga/anime art styles and comes with comic templates and backgrounds. You can do more painted work on there as well, however.

Mischief has a free version with a lot of features as well! The $25 version does expand on things and has some more to it, but I've used the free version and it offers a lot. Also, it's got an infinite zoom canvas which makes detail work fun. But...make sure you put markers because I have completely lost my drawings to the abyss LOL

I haven't used this last one, but PaintBerri is not a program, but a website that you can draw on using pen pressure. I've seen some pretty good stuff come out of it, but it's not really my thing.
