Sorry if this is the wrong board. Near as I could figure I think this is the appropriate place. Anyway.
Does anyone have any tutorials or tips for a shading style similar to the one the on-site art uses for NPCs and pets? I'be always thought it looked so aesthetically pleasing and I want to try it out. Not copy it outright, of course, but I'd love to find some resources to help me experiment!
Many thanks in advance~
i don't really save tutorials so i don't know if these will help you, but had some tips here. has a tutorial for wearables here. iirc made a cw tutorial that might be helpful for you as well but i can't find it rn. if you don't get any more useful answers it may be worth googling "cell shading tutorials" since that's the shading style subeta uses.
from my experience it's easier to cell shade on a separate layer from your flats, using a layer effect (most likely multiply). even if you don't use a layer effect, shading on a separate layer also makes it easier to fiddle with the colors after you've set them down, to make sure it looks good on top of your flats, and you can make a clipping mask with your flats so you don't have to worry about shading outside the lines if you're really sloppy and lazy like me. you also have to keep in mind that you aren't as free to blend your shading when you cell shade so how you place your darker values matters, though obv there's always room for flexibility in art so it really just depends on what looks good to you. when it comes to subeta-style cell shading, i'd say avoid using super dark shading, and maybe only use 2-4 shades, plus 1-2 for highlights. you can use the base color or highlight for reflected lighting. mostly i'd just recommend trying to study pieces that are in the style that you like, and incorporating whatever elements of that style works for you.
anyways good luck!
