I DO NOT want this to become a trend but after the purchase of a way to cook at camp fell through yesterday my back is against the wall - if it's inappropriate someone PLEASE tell me and I'll remove the topic.

To be completely honest I don't know what else to do at this point. Most of you know we are setting up a main camp at Bills (my godfather) place outside Naytahwaush. There is another pipeline coming that will be 20 miles from his land on the White Earth Reservation.

As of this moment they are cooking over open fire or when it's windy and cold over a hot plate setup inside the main tent. The electricity is powered off the solar panel. It's not big enough to do what we need to do. Yesterday the cook stove we had lined up fell through. I don't have any resources to get a replacement at this time, it's still lay off season. I told Bill last night since I've got paypal I would reach out to a group of online friends for help.

The alternative is propane. That is not acceptable.

IF anyone is interested in kicking a few bucks into providing the main camp with a wood cooking stove please help. If I am able to gather enough funding for the stove, any extra will go to picking up supplies the camp needs on my list such as (but not limited to and in no particular order) : stainless pots and pans, larger sinks, storage jars, more solar panels, 400 ft of garden hose, cooking utensils, sleeping bags, coffee, the list is enormous..

Proof of purchases will be provided.

map and information for paypal

[email protected] - please do not spread this around, reaching out was tough enough for me but I can't do this alone and we need help

Megwiich relatives, Mni Wiconi!

With yours, the others from our lair and my daughter, we have found a wood stove! We should be able to get the truck to haul it lined up this weekend!

As many as you want! They're using the main camp as a a gathering place so people come and go all the time and there is always something cooking.

Chi Megwiich all of you, those who helped and those who sent good thoughts!

(and ) gi'zaah gin (I love you ) - and I can not tell you how much I appreciate the help you guys are giving the camp but Duane .. aren't you in KY or Tennessee or somewhere down south? Im sure you could find a cook stove but doll, finding a stove there and getting it here .. unless y'all moved somewhere close to naytahwaush on white earth would cost more to ship than to buy one I think, that's a long freaking way.

We were able to find a small wood stove but man, talk about just in time.. it SNOWED two nights ago. Can you believe that? Almost May and it snows. I couldn't believe it, we go half of march and almost all of april and it snows. Nature is a very strange entity. It was chilly enough it stuck around until this morning even.

A care package.. man that's a tough one.. the list is huge at this point. Bill has decided to make camp not only a place to gather before going to the front lines when the pipeline comes but it's going to be a place to begin to reunite the community itself.

As the pipeline threat grows, it's like it's spreading, and people don't know which way to turn. We know camp will be vital when it reaches the outside edge of White Earth but we also know from Standing Rock that we need to bring the entire community together and educate each other on traditional ways for surviving (bartering, gardening, sharing the work of preparing for a crowd as well as accepting the ways of people we don't know, explaining what's happening when someone is called to speak to those who might not speak our language, that the drum and singing is how natives pray, the tobacco thing, which fire is for what, a thousand and one things like that)

We have learned from experience that no one, not tribal elders, the Army corp of engineers or the BIA know anything about what the treaties really say. Justin is so treaty-smart it's scary and even he says the double talk is almost impossible to sort out for him, so imagine what it's like for someone who wants to defend the land but isn't sure what land they have the right to defend without being hauled off to jail in a dog kennel. So we're going to have copies of the different treaties for our area and the other reservations in Northern MN printed off and he's going to try and teach us not only what they say but how to read them without getting totally confused.

There's also going to be different people teaching different ways to do things to provide for yourself and others, for example my nephew is going to show everyone how to build a chicken tractor without spending a lot. Others are stepping up and offering to show us how to make beech-bark bowls which if made correctly actually hold liquid, how to gather mushrooms, herbs, wild berries without getting poison oak or a boatload of ticks, how to turn a screen door into a dehydrator, how to gather maple sap, wild rice, a notebook full of things some of us thought everyone knew how to do and other things we had no idea were even possible.

We will make use of any and everything we get our hands on. The thing is what can be sent in the mail.

Lets see.. cooking utensils is one. They have two soup ladles, a couple large plastic serving spoons and spatulas but that's pretty much it. I gave them most of mine but that didn't amount to much.

We use tobacco but I don't think that can be mailed. (Not for smoking, its used in every ceremony and offered with every prayer and with every meal .. um .. to traditional people tobacco is vital, we sprinkle it on the earth or the sacred fire all the time. In our culture, the wafting smoke from the tobacco carries our prayers to the wings of the hawk who takes them to the wings of the eagle who takes them to the wings of the raven who takes them to the Creator. When sprinkled on the ground it's giving back to mother earth for giving us all we have.)

I'm still looking for garden hose so we can irrigate the garden area, stainless steel pots and kettles for cooking for crowds would be awesome, so would pillows and blankets but those would be way too expensive to mail, at least I think so. Containers for dehydrated and/or canned foods are also on my section of the list. Chairs (new, used, broken but still usable, anything but one you can not sit on honestly) for the elders or anyone who's not comfortable sitting on the ground to use at the spirit fire or when eating outside is another thing but these aren't feasible to mail either.

We've got phone cords covered though! They've set up two solar panel charging stations -- Sicca and I took all the spare chargers we could dig up in already and we had way too many.

A way to keep bugs out is also on the list. Anything like that screen door that snaps with magnets -- or something like it would really help. With the lake right there, the mosquitoes are going to be brutal at dawn and at dusk and we don't have any way to keep them out of the tents unless we close the entrances and stuff. When it gets hot, that's going to be a problem. I believe those are pretty spendy so we'll have to come up with an alternative for them.

The one thing Bill says not to worry about but I pick up whenever I can afford to is fun food. There isn't enough funding to buy fun stuff like graham crackers or mini candy bars. Camp can also always use staples (coffee, salt, sugar, ect) I mean who doesn't love to nibble on a handful of reeses pieces once in a while?

What else.. paper products for meal time are going to be needed when it gets warmer and more people spend time at camp so they're on the list too. Plates, paper towels, towels for drying dishes, scrubbers of any kind. I gave them my dry erase boards so they've got those and such.

Like I said the list of things we need is massive and last weekend we had several more people stop in even with the weather turning cold so anything will be most welcome should y'all choose to send it. Just drop me an sMail and I'll give you the address to send it too.
