I just got back from a hiatus and so much has changed with the wardrobe! Super exciting that we can move the base layer around and place it over/behind the backdrop, and understandably all the new backdrop items don't have a cut-out for the base. However, I think that being able to layer stuff under the backdrop still has some utility. For example, in this HA, I'm using the backdrop layer to hide the hair that's sticking out of the hood:

Hair layer under backdrop Outfit Not Found Hair layer over backdrop Outfit Not Found

My suggestion would be:

  1. Make it an option to convert the item between being a "foreground" (no cut-out) and a "backdrop" (cut-out) layer. This can just be something you can do in the inventory like with the collection items that convert between different items (though I don't think we need a new item name or image for the different forms of the backdrop/foreground).

  2. Make it an option in the wardrobe itself on the "Base" tab, like cleavage. Something like "Use Backdrop cut-outs?" Y/N maybe? It would apply to all backdrops used though.

I'm not sure how feasible this is, but yeah, I really miss being able to use the background to "clean up" other layers. Especially when it comes to items like the Broken Zipper hoodies; it's really hard to find a wig that fits under them naturally.

This would be great for layering.

If possible, I'd like to see the reverse too. Older backgrounds that already have a cutout should be filled in. I'd understand if it can't be done though. Even if the artists made the background in full before the base shape was cut out of it, how many files of the images pre-cutout still exist? But if any can be done, that'd be great to see.

Yes, I'm all for this.

The vanishing cream and/or whiteout used to be helpful for this kind of thing, but with the full backgrounds those items don't do anything useful.

I've thought the same thing multiple times, so full support. The cutout is great for "clipping/masking" certain bits of items but it's also useful to have a full image BG if you want to make an avatar without the human.

There's already the and where you can transform the item to have a cutout between the legs or not, backgrounds with a similar facility would be crazy useful.

This is a neat idea but it sounds seriously unpossible.

All the stencils we have are not like this, they always default white and you can't layer another item on top of them to fill in the white part.

I think you might be slightly misunderstanding what'd being asked for?

The stencils block out items/backgrounds below them and therefore have to be white to layer over lower layers. In this case it's asking for the option to have the HA cutout be optional, with the "hole" being transparent.

For example, it's be like having the option to have either or .

I wouldn't mind this but honestly this would be SO much work for something so small that will not even be used by everyone, I don't think its possible at all...

This isn't really feasible due to the time it takes. Backdrops already take us a LONG time - the choice is really between either filling in that HA gap or spending time cutting it out and smoothing the edges and uploading it as both male and female for the avatar.

Doing both would not only be a problem for the extra time spent on the art but also the time spent in uploading multiple versions of both overlays and items, descriptions for everything, checking and accepting and releasing everything - it's just not something we're going to be doing, I'm afraid. At least not with any kind of detailed backdrop.
