Hi everybody! I know we all love Harry Potter, but sometimes we need to venture outside of our comfort zone and try new books!

With that being said, I know we've got a great group of readers in our little community that have a wide variety of tastes. So why not share what you've read recently that really spoke to you? Maybe you might find someone who has also read it so you can discuss! Or if you are looking for new reading material, but are not sure where to start, come and request recommendations here.

If you're not sure what genre you're looking for, maybe start by listing some of your favorite books (other than Harry Potter, of course), and maybe that will help spark some discussion on other books to try!

Okay, I figured I'd double post to keep this separate from the OP.

I am looking for new book suggestions too!

I am mainly into fantasy, science fiction, and urban fantasy, but I like other genres too. Young adult is usually a good go-to for me, since I usually read before bed and anything too heavy doesn't usually jive.

Some of my most recent reads have been:

  • The Women of the Otherworld Series by Kelley Armstrong
  • Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
  • Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Okler

I also recently started reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Think anybody can help?

I'm currently reading The Blind Assasin by Margaret Atwood and The Handmaid's Tale is on deck.

My goal this year is to read more challenging and diverse authors. Drown by Junot Diaz was pretty good.

I'm currently reading The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard with my students. It's great if you enjoyed The Hunger Games series. It reminds me of Avatar/Korra a bit too.

I've seen The Red Queen around a lot, but I think at one point I wasn't really into it. I'll have to check it out again. I did like The Hunger Games series! Easy read and keeps you on your toes.

I wish I could get into the Divergent series. I read a couple of pages and just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was just that first few pages though... again, sometimes books just need second chances lol.

Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty looks good. The Miss Peregrine's series is also popular right now. I can't wait for the Scholastic book fair to set up shop in my school. Last year they showed trailers that looked like they were for movies.

Oh that sounds cool! I saw a book advertised on Facebook with a trailer as though it was for a movie earlier this month. I think it was for How to Hang a Witch? I can't remember. (That's on my to-read list!)

I'll definitely look into Serafina and the Black Cloak, thanks!

I'm currently reading Trigger Warnin by Neil Gaiman which is a collection of short stories, so far alright but not crazy about it. I'm also reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets illustrated book (yeah I know HP again), also reading (I have to laugh sorry) Fantastic Beast and where to find them screenplay (i'm only a few pages in thou).

I love the book Mort by Terry Pratchett

I read the Red Queen last year and haven't read the second one yet, I honestly didn't loved it but is ok to read.

I recently read the entire saga of T.A. Barron of Merlin The Lost years and the books that follow, it was good but I found some books to be much better than others.

One of my favorites book series is the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance) by Christopher Paolini - I love those books so much

and I must read a few Star Wars books because it's been a while. =P

I mostly like fantasy books, any suggestions welcomed.

I love the Inheritance Cycle books! The movie makes me rage hardcore though. How do you completely exclude an entire two races??

Are the Star Wars books any good? My husband is really into them, but he's also into the novelizations for games like Halo and Mass Effects, which don't really interest me. I might be willing to try some of the Star Wars books though.

I think I'll take a look into the Merlin Saga! It looks interesting, and is a nice long series. :) I like it when there's a lot of books.

A book that I always recommend is my favorite book in the world:

  • The Never-Ending story by Michael Ende

Many people know the movies but the book is so much better imo, I just love everything about it.

I also love "The Little Prince" a lot. Besides I have a big collection of Star Trek novels that I adore, where I especially would suggest the "Destiny" series - you need to have watched at least DS9 and TNG to fully enjoy it though.

My favorite Neil Gaiman book is Neverwhere. I've read a lot of his stories.

The Little Prince is lovely. I had to read it in French in high school. There's an animated movie of it on Netflix that's pretty cute. Also, welcome to Slytherin!

"The Little Prince" never fails to touch my heart. I went to a wedding once and they had a short passage of the book as part of a speech and I was like "No, you cannot start crying here...behave!". It was close though, lol

And thank you for the welcome!

DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT MOVIE!!! 😫 It totally ruined the books! I saw the movie before reading the books, and I thought well its ok but later I read the books and I rewatched the movie thinking I didn't remember anything from it by reading the books. After I did, I was in rage! How could they ruined such a fantastic story this way? No elves or dwarves, Saphira had bird wings!! Also she had this super sweet voice and was not the kick ass dragon she is! She is my absolute favorite so I was displeased. In ways I am so glad they didn't continue making them but wish someone would do the books justice.

There are a huge amount of Star Wars books out there and I have only read a few, but at least most of the ones I have picked were good. I once bought one (I can't even remember the title) that I couldn't even finish because it bore me. I mostly like reading about Obi wan and Qui Gon so it is hard to find books on them, but I'm going to try something from the new era and see if I like. No Obi for me is painful.

I like lots of books too, but if they are good, otherwise I stop. I am reading the Anne Rice vampire books and not all are very good imo. I'm going to read Prince Lestat next, but not until I finish the ones I'm reading and still need to finish all Terry Pratchett books too. 😵 They are so many!

I've only seen the movies! Will probably check it out when I have time. Little Prince is lovely.

I haven't read that one, only Good Omens and now Trigger Warning, but I have a few of his books in my ipad. I'm just slowly reading. I will read that one when I get to it, I probably have it. lol

I feel the same way about the movie. I did the same: saw the movie, then read the books. Now we can only watch the movie if we feel like making fun of it or want to take bets on how long it will take before the movie makes me ragequit. I usually don't make it much further after Brom admits he was a rider.

Which books are the ones with Obi Wan and Qui Gon? That would probably be what would interest me most too, to be honest. I feel like there wasn't nearly enough interaction with them in the movies.

As for Anne Rice, I've only tried reading Interview with the Vampire, and I am having a hard time with that one. There are so many other things I'd rather be reading, you know?

To make fun of it is the only thing you can, it angers me. lol

I have to look it up, because I am quite sure I have other books besides the Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson - which I read so many years ago (I'm old) and was my absolute favorite but I could never finish the books because they are very hard to find now. I'm trying to locate the ones I'm missing but I have around twenty of those - they are quite short and easy to read.

But I think there is also another book called Jedi Apprentice by another author that is also about Obi and Qui Gon. I also have one of Obi and Anakin which was good, must looked on my bookcase but it is hard to look in there. lol I will check it out.

I finally looked through my bookcase - what a nightmare- I found two books you might like: Legacy of a Jedi by Jude Watson and Rogue Planet by Greg Bear. I also have the movie books from Episode one and Clone wars. I actually don't remember what the books are about since I read them long ago- I need new Star Wars books, been years since I last read one.
