Not sure if this has been suggested / rejected, but I thought it can be interesting.

Civilized Color basically make pets anthropomorphic, chibi-fied and wears simple clothing. Closest reference I can give is something like "Animal Crossing", can encourage some creative designs and roleplay potentials.
