i've been really into fantasy books lately, and i'm always looking for more. so, what is your favorite book or series of books?
my wishlist ~ my tree ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ my style file ~
Hmm... How fantasy? Like classic non-existant creatures, like vampires and werewolves? Or fantasy as in new worlds? Or fantasy as in still our world, and still people, but also magic? The fantasy genre is so broad...
I've always been a big fan of The Dark is Rising series, which is a young coming of age story (geared for 12 year olds, but I was reading Jane Austen and Anne Rice when I discovered the series, and I still really enjoyed it!) about a boy who is by his birthright one of the Old Ones, humans who live in their times but also outside of time, and who work as members of the Light to save the world from the Dark. Anyway, I really enjoyed that series.
At the moment, I'm working on translating a French coming of age series into English. The series is called The Chronicles of Galadria, and the first two books are out in English, with the third one coming out in the next month or so (depending on how long it takes me to translate the last two chapters, and the author and I together to finish editing it!). The series is about a boy/man of about 17 or 18 who has always dreamed of going to another world and being a hero. Then, one day, a guardian from another world arrives and transports Glaide and his three friends to Galadria, where they're supposed to take on the roles of maggs (female white magicians, who are great healers and magical protectors) and protectors (skilled warriors who work with maggs to fight the monsters that are trying to take over that world). As they begin to discover the new world, they realize that they have a bigger role in everything than they thought, especially the main character, Glaide. The book is kind of about discovery, about the thoughts, questions, and observations that someone would really have as they discovered a new world, instead of just concentrating on a few fight scenes and such. I don't know, I like the series. :O
When I was younger, I was really into the Everworld series, by K. A. Applegate. I haven't reread any of the books as an adult, so I don't know what you would think in the end, but I enjoyed them back then. The basic premise is that all of the old gods and goddesses that were worshipped in different cultures all got transported to this other world somehow, which is why none of them seem particularly present on Earth anymore. Anyway, a group of young people find themselves transported there as well, and they have to survive in that much more complicated and deadly world. They have run-ins with Quetzalcoatl, Thor, and many other gods from all over the place.
If you want a light read that is a bit more cross-genre, the book Witch Is When It All Began is a book about a woman who didn't know she was a witch. She winds up investigating a mystery, and at the same time discovering her witchy roots and the nearby hidden town of supernaturals, where all of the supernatural members of her family live. I only read the first book (I found it as a temporary free download deal), and I really enjoyed it. I haven't purchased any of the other books, but they're definitely on my wishlist!

Well, if you like elves and dragons, both do show up in Galadria! If you do download the book, be sure to let me know what you think. :)

Discworld is definitely my favourite fantasy series (and book series in general). My favourites tend to be the ones that focus primarily on Rincewind, but more recently I've become more interested in the ones about the witches.
It's a very imaginative series that takes place on a world that the author has basically figured out every little detail for. Being a flat planet, their seasons work differently, the locations and cultures are explored in various novels, and it contains pretty much everything you'd expect in a fantasy series (tons of mythical creatures, and lots of variations on each creature too e.g. lots of different species of dragon).
And they're just hilarious! I love the way they're written. A very mischievous sense of humour, and a lot of satirical comedy too.

For me, it's LotR and Discworld. I'e read several other fantasy books, but I can't name them off the top of my head. lol
i haven't read discworld yet, but it's on my list. i love books that give a lot of detail about the world, it makes it feel more real.

Favorite fantasy series is definitely the Wheel of Time series, by Robert Jordan!
Ohhh.... but the Ilona Andrews series is really good too. Starts with Magic Bites.

i've got some wheel of time books! i read one ages ago, so i've forgotten it, lol. time for a re-read!
and that other series sounds interesting, i'll have to check it out!

The Ilona Andrews series is more urban fantasy, but it's REALLY good. It's a wife/husband writing team and they do a ton of research and pull in mythology from all around the world into the stories.

oooh, i love that kind of stuff. a well thought out & researched world is amazing!

The Kushiel Series, Mercedes Thompson series, The Nightwalker Series. All amazing and lots of material.

i don't think i've heard of those first 2 series. the nightwalker series sounds familiar, but i can't place it off the top of my head.

Kushiel series is a really weird mix of alt history, fantasy, alternative religion, political, love, etc. lol. I didn't think I would but I got sucked in. I have read all 9 books at least 20 times and when I had coffee with the author I cried after. lol. Mercedes Thompson is shipshafter, Native American, Werewolf, vampire. Nightwalker is demons, vampires, and lycanthrope.

OMG those all sound AMAZING! i'll have to check them out

I love them because they are not the stereotypical in the genre. Plus strong female leads in all three series. I love a strong female lead.

The Drizzt books by R. A. Salvatore. They follow the adventures of a dark elf named Drizzt, an oddity and outcast among his kind less because of his lavender eyes and much more because of his sense of honor, ability to love, and his disgust for his own race. Dint be warded off by my dismal summary, they really are a fantastic read. Some will say to stop reading after the prequel and first or second trilogy (it's a hefty series, but nothing compared to Wheel of Time), I say don't listen.
The Dresden sites by Jim Butcher is another favorite of mine, but I like his other series more. It's called Codex Alera, and since I'm really bad at explaining things, I'll leave this awesome Wiki article to help me: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Alera
