This was also discussed in this thread forever ago. Part of the discussion was about how "wifebeater" does mean that specific style of tank top, even if it's a regional term.

A wifebeater has nothing to do with beating up your wife.

I have heard tank tops referred to as wifebeaters but it wouldn't bother me to see it changed.

I think this has been suggested before and has been turned down. And I'm gonna leave this here: Words For Your Enjoyment: Wife Beaters

Personally I don't see the need for the name to be changed. The item itself is not referring to domestic abuse. If the item description made reference to it, then I could see it.

(omg can the site pls stop dying long enough for me to add to my post)

If the source of the name is so old and obscure that no one knows or remembers it, when the best known source of the name is the actual wife-beating reason it became part of the common lexicon, I would argue that the current meaning is quite pertinent.

If this topic keeps coming up all the time, it's because people and society still routinely associate the name with actual wife beating. This isn't a made up brand name like "Kleenex" becoming the catchall phrase for a soft tissue. The name is literally a portmanteau of wife and beater.

I see no reason not to name this item something different on Subeta.

The trend changed in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan — when police arrested a local man (James Hartford, Jr.) for beating his wife to death. Local news stations aired the arrest and elements of the case for months after — constantly showing a picture of Hartford, Jr. when he was arrested — wearing a dirty tank top with baked bean stains on it…and constantly referring to him as “the” wife beater.
From then on, men wearing dirty tank-topped undershirts were referred to as people who were “wearing wife-beaters” and the lexicon stuck from that point forward.
So it technically does have something to do with, well, wife beating.

Now the question is why are they called tank tops.

I think the best course of action is if you have an issue with the name of the item, to use an extension like FoxReplace for firefox, or I'm sure there are similar ones for Chrome/Safari/whatever other browser you want to use.

Changing the name won't actually change anything. The item isn't promoting domestic abuse, and it is a common term at least in certain parts of the United States for this style of tank top.

Henceforth, white tank top t-shirts will no longer be called "wifebeaters," they shall be called "divorced-guy-mustard-catchers."

While I don't particularly care if the name of this item is changed, I will add that I live in the United States and I personally call this type of tank top an 'A Tank' or an 'A Shirt' because that's how most underwear companies where I live label them; LINK and LINK That said the accepted / widely used term for it where I live is still 'wife beater'. =/

Really? They actually put Wife Beater in the description? Morons!

:P

You kind of have to dig to find tanks actually marketed as "wifebeaters." Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, Calvin Klein, and other big names market them as tanks because of the negative connotations of the term "wifebeater," which I think says a lot.

Can I just say that I would love to see them renamed as divorced-guy-mustard-catchers, because that's hilarious af. 8D

Otherwise, I have no opinion in this dilemma.

I have never heard that name for that style of top before (we call them vests or vest tops in the UK) and I honestly thought it was referencing domestic abuse or something, but I also figured it had some legitimate pop-culture reason for having the name. I don't think it should be changed though, idk :/

I've always called them undershirts even if they're not really undershirts. Which is better than the two names that I've always heard them called when I was growing up; the dirty stained ones- trailer trash, the bleached clean white ones- gang banger. :x
