Hi :) I hope you guys had a wonderful summer -- I know I'm excited for fall because you guys make such awesome seasonal wearables, and this is my favorite time of the year!

It's been a while since we've had a reminder about this, and it's getting pretty bad, so I just wanted to go over a few grammar reminders with everyone. Grammar/spelling mistakes in names and descriptions may not seem like a big deal, but they do take up time to fix, especially if it's the same mistakes made in several recolors -- and if there are too many or we see it happening over and over, we do reach a point where we have to deny items to have you fix these issues yourselves! So here's just a few quick things to remember when you're writing names and descriptions for your custom wearables.

: Proper Capitalization This is a pretty big one! Item names should follow proper capitalization for a title -- so all words should have a capital letter EXCEPT conjunctions in the middle of the title. Think a, an, the, but, to, etc. Incorrect: dress of the seven seas Incorrect: Dress Of The Seven Seas Correct: Dress of the Seven Seas

In descriptions, only the first word of the sentence or any proper nouns should be capitalized -- not random words or anything like that! Incorrect: Wow! Have you ever seen such a Beautiful Dress? Correct: Wow! Have you ever seen such a beautiful dress?

Incorrect: In france, they really like to eat baguettes. Incorrect: In France, they really like to eat Baguettes. Correct: In France, they really like to eat baguettes.

: Punctuation Complete sentences should have punctuation at the end - the correct punctuation! The biggest thing we see issues with when it comes to this is when ellipses are used. Ellipses should always be three periods -- no more, no less.

Incorrect: I was going to go on a walk..... but I took a long nap instead. Correct: I was going to go on a walk... but I took a long nap instead.

This includes when ellipses are used at the end of a sentence!

Also, VERY few words are pluralized with an apostrophe + s. Incorrect: There were five cat's in the basket. Correct: There were five cats in the basket.

Finally, there shouldn't be random spaces before punctuation. It should just be next to the final word! Incorrect: Where did you buy this dress ? It's so beautiful ! I love the color . Correct: Where did you buy this dress? It's so beautiful! I love the color.

As a reminder - we can add hyphens after acceptance, but item names cannot have apostrophes in them! It's best if you submit an item with a name that will not require an apostrophe to be grammatically correct, or it can take a bit longer to accept while we event you and wait for you to submit a ticket with a new name.

Regarding both and -- we tend to be more lenient when a description is obviously trying to be cute and may say something like "YAY!!!!!!!" but it shouldn't be overdone or excessive.

- We use American English! This has to get touched on every now and then, but it needs to be said once more. Subeta uses American English, which means all custom item names and descriptions need to also use American English. The two biggest we see is color vs colour and gray vs grey. I know this can be a bit hard to remember, but it is important for consistency!

: Steer Clear of Real Holidays Last year, and I went through to make sure CWs followed the Subeta holidays and we made sure they were being submitted as such! With the busy holiday season around the corner, please keep in mind that items should reflect Subeta holiday names. Here are just some examples:

Oktoberfest = Alegarten Halloween = Morostide Thanksgiving = Fireside Christmas = Luminaire / Lumineve Valentine's Day = Survival Easter = Vesnali

: Spelling! I'll be frank - I'm a terrible speller. I always have been. I love to write, but I'm awful with spelling. Thank god for red lines and browsers that help me spell better. If you're completely unsure how to spell a word, try to google what you're looking for. I do this all the time! It is extremely helpful, trust me!

There are of course a few little mistakes that pop up here and there, but these are really the big ones. If English is not your first language or you are really having trouble with grammar, remember that CWs do not need to have a novel for a description! A few words will do - and there's lots of awesome people on the forums that are MORE than happy to help with this sort of thing!

WHEW! I hope this helps! Do you guys think it might be helpful to have this topic stickied, at least for a little while? I guess it may stop from having to make a new one every now and then!

  1. Here's one list of spelling differences to reference. You can always simply Google words you're not sure of. Like, "grey vs gray" will give you an answer !
  2. Don't be afraid to ask someone for some help. English is not easy, not even for us native speakers.
  3. Double check before submitting to see if you added that space. I've corrected myself many times just before submitting, ahaha... Where did I even get it from ?

lol! Your first sentence there, took me a second to read it... lol. Love it. xD;;

Yes'm thanks for the reminder! I have sometimes put .... at the end of a sentence as I have seen that in novels, as I believe that means it's the end of the pause, but it's still... a pause.... lol. I would say sure, stickie it for a bit, just so ppl will see it for a little while and be reminded. I know some ppl still have issues with things, me too sometimes, or don't maybe know the proper way of doing stuff cuz they're new at it, so it's good to have some info to fall back on.

Thanks for the information!

.> <.<

I am guilty of doing the incorrect ellipsis thing but I've only done it once or twice I think... I guess I've done it a lot... I don't know how many times you've had to correct my mistakes but I'm gonna correct myself from now on! I'm so sorry you had to correct my mistakes! And I try so hard to have correct spelling and capitalization and stuff but I never bothered with correct ellipsis. I did it for extra accentuation or because I've gotten used to doing only two. >.> Even though I am aware that ellipsis are supposed to be only 3 dots... T_T

shame

I've gone ahead and stickied this thread for now! There's a few other threads I want to clean up around here so this one can definitely stay on top for a bit :) Thanks everyone!

Also... forgot to mark my first post 'official post' as usual so marking THIS one as official just in case anyone missed this by keeping tabs on the admin posts. Sigh! I'll remember it sooner or later.

I did not even know we were supposed to only use American english on CWs. Makes sense though. :P We mostly learned British English at school, so I'm quite positive I often go with that spelling, unless I learned words later on. Will make sure to double check when submitting something from now on!

Thanks for the list!

Looking for some previous years Melody items. Especially books and minions. Happy to trade!

Hello guys. It's been a while since I pinged you to this board, but a reminder is really, really, really needed.

Please remember that using correct grammar in both your item title and description is VERY important. Take a few minutes to review the first post. Submitting CWs with grammatical errors can really slow down the acceptance/denial process, since these have to be edited after acceptance.

Unfortunately tonight, I have had to correct about 1 out of every 3-4 CWs I accept.. It's getting to the point where items are going to need to be denied for grammatical issues, so PLEASE take the extra 30 seconds to make sure everything is written clearly! Some of the bigger offenders are using British spellings, not adding punctuation at the end of a sentence, and not using apostrophes in contractions in the descriptions.

Thank you, all!

- If it helps people at all, here's a post from about all of the spelling changes that has made across the site: click me. It might help people see which spellings Subeta has decided to use!

Just a little thing for people: There's this wonderful free add-on that you can get on all browsers (as far as I know) called Grammarly that will check your spelling and punctuation in textboxes and such. n_n It's super helpful in my opinion.
