I'm glad the timezone information is now publically available, but a lot of people still get confused about Subeta's timezones (myself included), and new players don't even realize there are time zones. Hiding this information in the Subetapedia where most people won't know to look for it doesn't make sense when you already have a logical place to put it: the Explore page.

I really think if you're going to move forward with timezones and continue to make them more and more important to Subeta's gameplay (as you have with the Zentu's day/night coloring), this information needs to be easier to find and to understand.

So, here's what I suggest:

1. Add the important timezone information to the map on the Explore page. Specifically, the borders and relative times (ST+0, ST+1, etc.). The timezone names (Centropolis Time, etc.) and specific hours of nightfall can be left on the Subetapedia article.

2. Link to the Subetapedia article from the Explore page. Most people won't know it even exists otherwise.

3. Redraw the timezones so they don't cut through the middle of Shengui Guo, Shadowglen, and other places. Real timezones aren't perfectly vertical unless they're over the ocean where you don't need to worry about cutting a state or country in half. Shengui Guo is definitely the worst offender, but a lot of other places are split in strange ways too.

4. Don't draw the timezone borders through the inset Atebus map since they're not relevant.

5. Optional, but recommended: Add a rotating day/night banner to show which timezones are currently experiencing nightfall, and which are in daylight. This simple visual cue would make it so much easier to understand Subeta's timezones at a glance. With this, you could easily see that night doesn't fall in Shengui Guo for another 3 hours, instead of having to juggle numbers as you convert from your time zone to ST to ST+5 (or ST+6?)

6. Also optional: Add a working clock with the current time over the corresponding ST+0 timezone. It keeps all the information together, and makes it clearer which timezone is Subeta Time.

Putting it all together with my mediocre photoshop skills, this is (roughly) what I'm proposing for the Explore map:

Some notes:

  • The day/night banner probably doesn't need to be so bright. It would be cool to see it drawn in the same style as the Merana and swampie drawings already on the map.

  • If you keep the top and bottom of each timezone a standard width (~80px seems to work well), you could just slide the banner that distance once each hour, which should make it relatively easy to implement.

I like linking to the Subetapedia time zone article on the explore page and adding the shifting day/night banner along the bottom, but I don't really like the idea of marking up the map too much as it's quite nice on its own (the lines kind of take away from it).

I think the weird splitting of Shengui Guo might be canon - why would time zones have taken it into account if it was just found recently?

I think a link to the article and map would make sense. Or even some text on the page explaining some of it.. I'm not at all a fan of changing the actual map to have lines drawn through it though. When I look at a map to find a place irl I don't see timezone lines. And I would prefer the map with links on it to not have extra borders making it more busy.

I'm not sure about doing all of this to the actual explore map, because it could get a bit messy and cause confusion. But I do think it would be nice to have the time zones on the map in the 'pedia article be drawn a bit more clearly like you've shown.

A link to the article page on the explore page would be nice as well, so people know about it and can find it if they want to look at it. And those who don't care aren't bothered by too much info on the plain map.

- I'm not sure the day/night banner would make enough sense without the timezones. I totally agree that the thick black lines over everything don't work at all, though. But I think there has to be a way to draw them so they could be used on the main map without becoming a distraction.

Like drawing them thinner and using a faint brownish color that fit better with the style of the map, for starters. And then maybe using dotted lines, or only drawing them on the ocean and not the land? Idk.

Edit: Or maybe if you just use alternating dark/light stripes over the ocean (like this) you could do without any actual lines.

While it's a nice idea to do it to the Explore page, we have plans to update it in the future so messing with the map now to just have to redo it again later likely won't happen (our resources can be used best elsewhere). Also, like , I'm not a big fan of making the actual explore map image super busy.

Do a lot of people just use customcss to get rid of the subeta clock? I would think it wouldn't need to be put on the actual subetapedia page when it's all around site.

Honestly if you ask a good number of users if there is a clock on every single page (without looking), many will say no.

I'd like that map you have here on the actual Subetapedia article.

And I totally didn't know there were time zones until they made the article and I've been here for almost three years, apparently.

Time zones were implemented like 14 months ago I think? They're relatively new :)

I love the idea of the banner. I'm not a big fan of the lines. But the banner.... That's a great idea!

I still don't understand what is affected by the time zones and have enough trouble thinking about mine in rl being diff to subeta ^_^;

I love Speiro's ideas but if they are a no go then maybe at least a link on the explore map page to the Subetapedia time zone page. This will make it easier for users and make new users aware of the time zones.

Time zones only affect the day and night land images, mori/nori, and day/night zentus. I don't think anything else is affected?

- thank you honey. I was thinking it changed when Peka was open and would affect Alegarten shop times.

Peka is open at fixed times, not dependant on day/night (I think it's open for an hour during the day and an hour during the night?) Alegarten is dependant on its own hours too. I forget what exactly they are but doesn't follow the day/night time zones. The times those both provide follow the clock at the top of the page. :)
