Tributes for these kinds of thing are generally something that if an artist feels passionate about, they create themselves without much input. We've had a few opportunities for tribute items this past week and haven't gotten any. I don't really support every time something tragic happens or someone famous dies, we get an item from it.

No, please let's not. This is a light-hearted pet site for playing with cutesy little magical animals; let's not get involved with the whole mess of arguments about gun control (pro- or anti-), Islamophobia, homophobia, terrorism, etc, surrounding the case. It seems... really tacky, tasteless, and kinda disrespectful. Let's be real here. How would the victim's families feel?

I thought the 9/11 memorial was bad, too.

TBH I find it really disrespectful and tacky when people try to take advantage of a tragedy by asking to get free items out of it.

As said, the artists will do it in their own time.

I think tributes are a better fit for idols who impacted a lot of people, not just to pick tradegies that were deemed worthy enough.

The victims shouldn't be remembered by a free item on a pet site, that seems rather distasteful. I'd consider dedicating your signature to it, if it affected you deeply.

We didn't get anything for the Paris shooting, if we got one for this mass shooting, I would feel a little peeved, since it would be too Americanocentric to my likings, as it would pretty much imply that horror only happens in the USA, whatever else happens elsewhere doesn't really matter.

I don't know that this is the sort of thing we should get a tribute for. It's a great tragedy, and the victims do absolutely deserve to be remembered, but I just don't know how I feel about getting a tribute item from it.

Mostly I wish people would stop suggesting tributes to be made. Even if they're suggested I'm pretty sure they don't get made unless an artist decides that they want to make one.

As someone who lives 5 minutes away from where the shooting happened and knows members of the LGBT+ community affected by it, I don't think it's necessary for Subeta staff to make an item for this tragedy. What's the point? What does it memorialize?

It's fine if an individual staff artist makes something because they feel moved or if a user makes a CW tribute. But, asking for a free item is kind of disrespectful...

Why are people even requesting tribute anyway? It has always been shot down.

I'm getting clarification eventually on whether or not suggestions for recently deceased celebs and events like this one should get locked or not

It doesn't hurt anybody to have a request board for these sorts of things. Even if I'm in the middle of working on a tribute item, it's nice to switch over to the board and see what the ideas are for it.

Everyone gets a free item out of it, though, not just the person asking. Even the person asking doesn't get a say in what the item actually IS. When you think about it, it's probably the most selfless item suggestion a person can make.

@ bean - For future events, what might be a good idea is for a staff artist to start a board that says something like "hey, I'm working on a tribute item, and I'm open to any suggestions". That way, there won't be the controversy that surrounds users starting threads requesting tribute items.

While I agree that getting a tribute item for this event doesn't feel necessary, it might be nice to re-release some Pride items as tribute. It's also Pride month anyway, so it would fill both needs to get the as a Free Gift again.

I wouldn't like that personally, for a bunch of reasons. I just like to see what the general consensus is!

But I don't see why there's a controversy in the first place. Unless you're very cynical, the boards are usually created because people are feeling sad and want something that's important to them to be memorialized. We might not do it. We might do something very different from what's requested. The worst that happens is someone might say "No, that doesn't sound like a fitting tribute to do on a pet site" or somebody pops in to say a deceased person is undeserving, but pretty much any suggestion board has the potential to turn ugly.

@ bean - Okay, I can see where you're coming from.

Edit: Despite what I said earlier, the item touched me.
