i'm 19 years old and i just got my first jury summons. i've already done some research on ways to get out of this civic duty but i'm wondering if anyone here has some experience/personal insight, or maybe some advice i haven't read yet. frankly i still feel like a child so it's kind of bewildering for me to be going to the court for jury duty, my brain is just kind of like "??? why am i, a child, being summoned" but then i remember that chronologically i'm not a child HAHA oh man... not to mention i've got baby face, i'm often mistaken for 14/15 so this is definitely gonna be interesting. that might actually play in my favor, actually.

anyways i was actually planning on relocating soon for family reasons so me getting selected, depending on how long the trial is would put a damper on all that. fingers crossed! anyone got jury duty stories?

I was summoned last year. I filled for disability and school duty so I couldn't go (still had to pay for the damn paperwork..) . You can get out if you are in school full-time.

i got jury duty almost immediately after turning 18 :( if you go, just be prepared to be really bored! its mostly sitting and listening for hours on end. you don't really get paid much and its a pain. the only thing that might be stressful is the waiting to be called in the court room, and going through security. being inside the court room isnt that scary.

Truth is, you can't really stop it completely so much as just delay it. In California, where I'm originally from, you can delay it for school purposes, but you can't stop it completely. When I was in undergrad I used to delay it until school breaks, but I was lucky enough that in general I could either delay it again due to summer school or because I was usually out of state on vacation and therefore not able to attend.

That said, most people are not chosen. I've been to jury duty twice in CA. Once, as an alternate juror and I had to be there for a week. If anyone dropped out then yes, I would of had to serve, but never did though. Legally, your school/professors are required to allow you to have leave for jury duty.

The second time, was back in 2015 and I never got called to actual jury duty. I basically just sat around in the downtown city courthouse in their waiting area for an hour to see if my name ever got called and it never did.

Note: at least in CA, if you've served once as an alternate juror/juror you don't need to attend for another year or two I believe.

Also, if you're going to be out of state, re-locating and won't be able to attend, use that as a reason because it is a legitimate reason. You need to be present to attend jury duty after all. I attended undergrad in LA, but got my jury duty in my hometown which was 2 hours away so I usually just said I couldn't attend.

i went to jury duty yesterday and didn't get selected! i wasn't even questioned, but i came really close to it , haha. i was also expecting to be put in selection for a boring civil case, it turned out to be a criminal case, with ah, murder involved... really glad i didn't get put on that jury.

i actually found being inside the courtroom to be the most stressful part. i guess being in places of authority (? does that make sense)/being around people of authority (police offers, judges) just stresses me out. plus the thought of being questioned by the judge/lawyers, it was really nerve wracking. thankfully the judge decided to stop the selection process at juror number . i was so i was right next in line for questioning! thank god i didnt have to speak, i would've made a fool outta myself......

I know this is bad and I personally would never do it - but I know people who have let the court people know they are racist, homophobic, and all that to get out of it. It weighs bias on a case and they do not want that in the court room. Good luck! I say go and see what it's all about. I heard it's super boring, lol!

I was summoned a couple years ago. Went through the process online that I had to do and told them I didn't have a reliable source of transportation as I don't even work or possibly have enough money for public transportation. Sent me a thing in the mail saying I was excused. Yay, haha! I have really bad anxiety when it comes to being around a lot of people, especially no one I know. If it comes down to it again where I actually have to go, then maybe they'll still let me go for that reason if I start freaking out and crying.

When it comes down to it, you might have to go in. Typically you can get out of it then by saying that you don't trust the police. That gets you excused in a hurry!
