Hi! I actually joined about a week ago, but I've been just getting used to going around the website. It's been a while since I've been on a website like this, and I'm still sort of learning.
A few things about myself:
-Call me whatever you wish; Owls are birds, or Owls, or whatever nickname you decide for me is good! -Although my account is owl-themed, my favorite animal is octopuses! They're so cool! -My username comes from a debacle where someone claimed that owls weren't birds. I don't. Even know. -My favorite color is purple.
That's it! Thank you, and I hope to make lots of friends!
Welcome! I love octopi too and lots of other cephalopods; they are very fascinating animals.
Random cephalopod fact: The brain of giant squids is donut shaped :o
Yes! It's good to find people who also love cephalopods!
And yes, that's a wonderful fact! They really have an intelligence, although pretty similar to ours, also comes from a body plan VERY different from ourselves!
Also, sadly my spellchecker doesn't recognize cephalopods as a word!
EDIT: To whoever sent the anonymous gift with all the octopus items, thank you! I've been doing my best to collect octopus items (and there are some I did not put on myself so they could stay in octopus form for viewing!) Thank you so, so much!
I sometimes like to think about what the ocean would be like if the octopus has longer lives and/or more pro-social behavior. They definitely have the dexterity to pick up tool use and can be very clever problem solvers. Maybe in a few million years ( if we can reverse or halt ocean acidification and not mess it up otherwise) there could be octopus societies. Or maybe they would evolve social structures like dolphins and whales. Who knows though, but it is fun to speculate.
There is a really great professor who works at the uni I want to who writes books about animals field of animal cognition named Frans De Waal. He is a primatologist who studies social behavior and empathy so he writing often focuses on that, but if you are into animal cognition in general, his books are great reads and he posts a lot of interesting things on his public facebook page.

Ah, thank you so much! You all are really too good! And yeah, I like owls too, though my partner likes them way more than I do. I actually named my Noktoa after them!
I'm pretty interested to know what the person who thought owls weren't birds thought they were! Welcome to Subeta :)
Feel free to ask if you have any questions c:

I sadly don't know, but they were adamant that owls were not birds.
And thank you so much for all the useful links! I'm going to read through them thoroughly!
maybe the person thought owls were dinosaurs, or maybe ghostly forest spirits? LOL but that's a great story and hilarious, so thank you for it. :D Welcome, this place is addicting, good luck
Possibly! Though, I feel bad about not giving more details, but it was in reference to a game that hasn't come out yet, and I didn't want to post spoilers about it. It was super silly, though.
Hi
Your username gave me pause for a second because I was going "Wait... Of course they are." But then I once knew a woman who swore up and down when a vulture flew across the road that it was a pterodactyl.
Also a cephalopod fan though my favorite animals are bats and wolves. My favorite colors are purple and green though.
Welcome to Subeta!
this gives me all sorts of fun thoughts, like owls are TORPEDOES... owls are MISSILES :D
So there's in-context re: the game, and out of context re: LIFE that makes "owls are not birds" into something ridiculous. I like it.
Yeah I don't really get how mistakes this large happen! There are some mistakes I totally understand, such as calling Pterosaurs and Dimetrodon dinosaurs, and what certain extinct (and some rare living) animals look like, but then you have stuff like this where it's really something you should have learned at a VERY young age, and they just don't. How do people in life go without knowing that pterodactyls are extinct, or that owls are birds? I just don't know.
Bats and wolves are awesome too! They're not my absolute favorite, but I still love them too!
And I just got to say, to everyone, thank you for being so welcoming! I don't really know how best to pay you all back for this, because I've never had such a warm welcome before!
:D I... would have thought so too, . Hilariously, that same person didn't know what a groundhog was. I live in the Southern US, but I think groundhogs are a lot of places. Anyhow, she didn't know what they were, and she goes "LOOK! There's a thingy on the side of the road!" not so amusing as the pterodactyl BUT pretty close.
Also, I can't speak for everybody here, but no need to pay me back. I'm always happy to make friends.
to be fair, I live in a pretty urban city (also somewhat in the south), so for a long time, although I had an idea of what a groundhog was, and I'd seen a few images of them in cartoons, I'd never seen a real life one (or a more realistic image of one) until I went to college. Though, I didn't call it a thingy when I first saw it, but I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at first. I've been seeing them more lately, which is both good (they're doing well enough to be spreading out their territories) and bad (I'm always seeing them at the sides of roads, and it makes me kind of nervous. They don't look like they'd be super fast, and they get so close to the road I worry they could get hit!)
Exactly. They're not super fast. But they are definitely adorable. To be fair, I'm totally blind so I wouldn't be able to see one but I think I'd be confused at first too. I do have a realistic plush animal though. XD I tend to collect interesting plush animals, both here and offline.
