i think it would be pretty fun to start making cws, but i really don't know how i should go about it. i'm not sure if it's more normal/better to start working through commissions for other people, or to start your own shop, or what! either way, i've been trying my hand at drawing and shading subeta style: >> normalish wig?? >> a bit more creative >> this one is loosely inspired by beyonce in hold up they are all wigs, but still... can you tell if this is subeta-style appropriate or not? if not, what should i be trying to change? and is there any interest for any of this ideas in particular, or for my services in general if you look at them as a "portfolio" of my work? any other advice for someone trying to get into the cw scene around here would be rly welcome!!

hiii, your style is so unique. Ah this forum is a little bit dead so I'm sorry that no one responded to you! I think you are on the right track actually especially with some of the colouring found in the third and second. Line art for the wigs seems to be a problem since at some places in the 2nd wig, it is kind of inconsistent especially on the braid portions. I thin the third wig has colouring that strikes me as being pretty unique and I love the beyonce vibe that this is giving! Shading in the first wig also feels bit off and thick.

I would suggest you use the resized version of the wigs and bases with eyes, so its easier to see how it would look onsite. I am personally not an artist, but if you have any questions with how to release and things like that, you can drop me a comment or ping me c:

is ur shading tutorial still around ;o; maybe u can give some crits

thank you so much for the advice!! it was all extremely useful. not to mention just hearing back from someone at all! it was pretty discouraging to get no replies to this topic... :/ i'll definitely pay more attention to line quality and try to steer the shading to what you said seems better. and the sizing thing seems super obvious now that you pointed out, but i really hadn't thought about it!! i'll keep that in mind for the future! i think i'll have a go at releasing something on my own soon... i hope you meant it when you said i could hit you up with more questions bc i probably will! and thanks again!!

ah, thanks!!! that's really exciting to hear! i think i'm gonna shelf all of these as practice and create something new for release, but i hope you still like whatever i come up with... it's probably also gonna look a bit crazy! :D

To expound on what Meso said regarding the lineart, one reason my older (2013-ish) CWs would get denials is "rough" or inconsistent lineart. I recommend for you to use a set brush size for the lineart, so that it remains solid even when scaled down. Of course, "internal lineart" does not have to have the same thickness.

Some artists use a bezier curve (if your software supports it) or some other vector tool for the lineart. In SAI, you can also use the freehand vector for the consistent line thickness. Do check the 125 x 250 pixel size of your overlay images too -- something that may look smooth in the working size may look too sharp/blurry when scaled down.

It has been roughly 3 years since I submitted a CW that I drew by myself, though, so guidelines may have changed since then!

I do like that you're unafraid to experiment with concepts that seem to be out of the fad/norm. While I wouldn't use any of these myself, I do see a lot of potential in you. Looking forward to see you set up shop.

this is really helpful advice! it might seem obvious, idk, but i had really not thought of keeping a consistent lineart width while making these. it's an easy fix that will go a long way! and thanks for all the technical advice, i have a lot of weird gaps in my knowledge when it comes to working digitally, so this is all gonna go a long way for me. any particular reason why you stopped? and ah, thanks!! that's a compliment i really appreciate B) although i do wanna make things people actually like rather than just indulging in my own weird tastes, so i will definitely be trying to find a compromise when it comes to style. maybe i'll even make something you like one day! but either way, thank you for the support!!

what program do you use? ;o I think the main issues are the lineart being a tad inconsistant and too much contrast (which can easily be fixed!) but it's super creative!

Light source for cws (and items in general) is top left - therefore the right side should globally be darker whereas the left side should be a bit lighter. This will help define the perspective and depth of your wigs (:

I'm currently not at home but I could do a quick sketch of what i mean later tonight, if you'd like!

i'm in a committed relationship with paint tool sai :0 cool! i'll focus on both of these things! i'll try to be less excessive with contrast and use more of an internal lineart with delicate shading to differentiate different strands. and i do get what you mean! sorry, i wasn't home either when you posted this. but if you were just referring to the light source, i don't think it's necessary for you to draw it! i can also see it on the base where the light is coming from. by the way, do you have any idea where i can get a large version of darker skinned bases? and thanks for all the advice, you do really amazing work!

hi there! I totally forgot to reply, im so sorry ;; Could you send me a quick mail with your questions and I'll try to reply tonight or tomorrow with some screenshots and all! n_n

For the dark base - I honestly just used the normal-sized one and then resized it to 250x500 (so yes it'd be a bit blurry!)
