It's over.
The fan activity seemed to have ebbed in the last months, possibly partly due to the pauses.
While I also kinda moved on during that time I still have that empty, numb feeling now that I get when something I have enjoyed for a long time ends. (I have rewatched every other animation several times but I couldn't bring myself to do it for Act 7, yet.) :(
So the ending itself (including the conclusion of Act 6), well, considering the hype it was clear that it wouldn't be completely satisfying. The fights, the music and the overall animation (especially seeing actually fluent animation in Act 7 was surprising) were great as always. However, I did not quite get how exactly Lord English was defeated; the treasure was used against him and Calliope destroyed the Green Sun which was the source of his powers with a black hole (the one that was created by possessed Jack's head?), is that correct? There is also the issue that due to the transfer from the doomed timeline lots of the character development didn't happen. Davepetasprite^2 has mentioned to Jade that those things were still important for the "greater Jade". Also it is a bit disturbing that John replaced his dad by Jane's. I am wondering if Terezi could use her Mind powers to transfer memories from the alternate versions like she remembered herself.
It was nice to see all the different species living together in the new universe. I wonder how their society will be. (How will the humans procreate considering there is a shortage of their DNA?)
By the way, what happened to Gamzee?
there are a lot of holes not filled up in act 7 thats for sure. and a few more made from the vague-ness of it all. i think, though, that if hussie does do an epilogue it might(? i hope) cover some of those missing elements perhaps? as it stands though, its really ambiguous if the kids actually are out of the game for good and living happy or if thats all just a momentary illusion. after all showing caliborn doing some weird mojo could still mean that there is a possibility they have to fear something from him, idk. that said, it was left open ended for interpretations from the readers and there are a lot of ways to interpenetrate what happened.
i also disagree with you that john 'replaced' his dad with the alpha version of dad; i dont think he did at all. he was happy to see the person he knew as his dad alive after years of knowing his own dad was dead. its understandable he was happy to hug him. but he knew that his dad was dead and that this was not his dad. he is also still related to that version of dad in that john was poppop who was this dad's dad. its a big confusing loop of dads but i dont think john could ever replace his dad.
and gamzee, who knows. there were a lot of characters we didnt exactly see who we could(should) have seen. for instance terezi wasnt seen after everyone was shown in this new world together. where did she go? and her mind abilities; i have to wonder if the kids and trolls still have their abilities to that extent since everyone was shown in their original clothing. but there could be a lot of reasons behind that too.
Gamzee is still stuck in the fridge I think? (He got fridged lmao)
Anyway, I was a huge homestuck fan ack in 2012 (like that february I think?), but kinda stopped reading during 2014. I felt like it was really drawn out and could have easily wrapped up not long after cascade happened. I ended up reading the ending (and the parts I missed) because the nostalgia factor was far too great.
As for the ending, while there's stuff that needs to be covered, there is gonna be an epilogue (maybe even more because this is homestuck after all) as well as a video game (Though it's not really following the webcomic but it might still answer questions somehow). I thought it was very nice ending the whole thing on a happy note.
and I thought the whole juju thing was just them from a different timeline? shrugs
Man, it's been a while since I discussed Homestuck with anybody. Part of me was ashamed of ever being interested in the first place, considering how cancerous the fanbase actually managed to get. I think most people jumped ship, grew up, or moved onto Undertale (may the gods have mercy on poor Toby Fox's soul). I still manage to like the webadventure itself, but I'm so glad to have moved past my teenage fangirl stage.
I kind of assumed whatever ending we got wouldn't really be completely satisfying. I felt sort of bittersweet about seeing it go. Bitter because it was a large part of my interests at one point, but happy because god damn it's finally got an ending.
I know years ago AH discussed that there would be seven acts and the final act would just be an epilogue, so he's sort of had it planned out for a long while. Whether he decides to actually go through with the epilogue is anyone's guess, though. Hopefully it'll answer some questions if he does.
I think Lord English was just consumed by the black hole. I don't think the treasure had anything at all to do with his death (disappointingly). I believe it was just an exit to the new world that the kids managed to create. As for the kids retaining their powers? I believe it was stated earlier in like...Act 5 that they retain their powers and effective immortality in the world they create, making them practically the gods of that world. Now, whether that still stands as true or something the characters assumed to be true, I dunno.
Also I don't think John replaced his dad. Technically, post-Scratch, his 'dad' is actually his son. It's weird, but then again, Homestuck has always been strange.
I was there at the beginning and I was there at the end. It feels weird now that is is over.... I feel like a whole lot of nothing was resolved, but I mean Hussie had so much filler going on through at 6 that it was probably hard for him to keep up.
I still love Homestuck, and I'm going to re-read it. But it does feel weird as hell that it is over...
man that was seven years of my life down the drain but i gotta say homestuck filled a huge gap for me id never noticed was even there before so
im sad its over, im sad the ending wasnt as satisfying as most people hoped, but at the same time it was a seven year long buildup- it was never going to be as good as we hoped, lol. poor guy was probably burnt out to hell and back- just as a casual creator its impossible for me to /not/ get sick of something after even a month or so
im just kinda happy we had it for as long as we did, and im gonna keep writing fanfic for it till i get sick of it aha
this is sort of late but yeah i'm kinda really disappointed in the ending. i kind of hope the epilogue helps fill that weird empty feeling the ending gave a lot of people.
also, gamzee was on that planet that exploded. rip in piece poor clown.
Yeah, replacing was probably not the right word. It is maybe more like Dave and Dirk who know that the other one is not their Bro but someone who reminds them of him and who they can talk to about him. Still it is kinda weird... but Dad Crocker's existence is pretty weird by itself.
I have read some discussions with explanations in the meantime and was basically alternating betweeen "oh, now I understand" and "I'm more confused than before". :D
One thing I remembered is that the kids are still the last humans and probably will always be. While the trolls got another matriorb, human reproduction isn't a solved problem. There is only very little genetic material left between them and most of them are not even in relationships that seem "fertile". Maybe with the help of ectobiology? Are hybrids of trolls and humans possible?
