So...first CW, decided to keep it simple. Nothing too fancy. But now I'm wondering if it's too simple. I suck at shading (I have little experience) and it doesn't help that the color is black >.< And the thing is, there's nothing else I can think of to try to improve this.

 1. I'd really appreciate advice if something needs to be improved.
 2. Would this count as small accessory or large accessory? I think it's large, but I'm not entirely sure.
 3. Lastly, would anyone ever be interested?

Help, pls?

hello! i agree with barbie that it looks a bit pixelated and flat, but i'm not an artist and unfortunately can't help you get it accepted. i'd definitely be interested though, it's so cute!

Thanks! I tweaked the overlay a little bit. Is it better? I don't know how to make it less flat-looking.

repinging you because I changed the image - my bad on the light source of the panda lol

(view image in new window for fullsize)

Basically - the overlay ear isnt totally aligned, our right one is pushed too far back! They have to be parallel. It is also lacking a bit of shading.

As for the CI, you need to visualize the light source being top left. I drew a small sun to help that!

Your handwriting is pretty sparkly eyes

Ohhhh your points make so much sense, why I shaded the image like that doesn't make sense anymore! I'll work on that ASAP. May I ask how I'd shade the overlay more? When you say lacking, do you mean I need to emphasize/contrast the shading, or add more layers? There aren't any creases or whatnot, so I'm not sure how to work on it.

Hey there! I hope you don't mind me butting in with some advice. ^^ Your panda ears are going to be so cute when they're finished!

I agree with Cathii about pretty much everything, but I thought maybe I could explain it a little differently that might be useful.

First of all, on the overlay (ears), you need a little bit of shading. Right now, as far as I can tell, they are just black and white. Also, I agree that the placement is a little off. Try looking at other ear cws in the wardrobe to get an idea of where a "natural" ear placement would go!

Secondly, I made a little graphic to help illustrate my points about shading.

It seems like you understand the light source now, but your highlight is too harsh and you still don't have enough layers of shading in other areas. "Layers of shading" usually means being able to see at least 3-5 distinct colors in your art to create a realistic-ish look with shadows and highlights.

On black and white objects, this can be a little hard to achieve, but is definitely doable! For black, start with a medium or dark grey color as your base, then use darker grey and black to create shadows. If the object is supposed to be shiny, then you can use a lighter grey to create a "shine" highlight where the light would be strongest (top left). For white, you can use a very light grey or very light cream color to shade (depending on what kind of "white" you want, of course.) Remember to create shadows that follow the shape of your object. You can see the very darkest shadow on the panda icon is at the bottom right, where the least light would be.

I also added some eye "shines" to the panda icon to create a little more interest since is a very simple design, and to show that you had meant to include eyes in the design. I couldn't see the eyes you had on there until I was zoomed in, since the colors were too dark/similar.

If you have questions, feel free to ask! Hope this helped!

Of course I don't mind! In fact, you clarified everything! For the overlay, I started out with a dark base color, which is probably why the shading I did isn't obvious. Since it's what you suggested for the CI, should I also start off with a somewhat lighter dark gray for the overlay?

I got all your points, and will definitely try to fix the art tomorrow or when I get the chance! Thank you so much!

You're welcome! I'm glad I could clarify a little bit. ^^ Yep, all the rules for cis apply to overlays too. Start with a lighter color and layer up. Also, it might be helpful to keep in mind that if you're drawing at a larger size, then shrinking it to fit subeta's size standards, the colors will appear darker after shrinking - wish also explains the loss of shading detail. Good luck!
