I've been wanting some lolita dresses for my HA for a long time, and started fiddling around with a common classic lolita dress (I've even sewn a dress very similar to this one in real life for myself ;)).
I've preemptively opened up shop, but I still want to gauge interest since I haven't finished making it.
I've already started working on the item and overlays and they're almost finished, although the shading does need heavy fixing I think. Here's the item and overlay work that I have done so far.

I also possibly want to do recolors, in blue, purple, gray, green, and pink, so if you prefer one of those colors I may tally and change the initial release color. If you have any design suggestions I'm also open to discussing them ^_^
List of suggested corrections -soft brush for lineart -more shading, especially frills, with 3-5 distinct shades
the forum post with the rules is not available any more, if I did something wrong by pinging please let me know :c
Hi! c:
The dress is cute, what do you draw with?
I think it does need more shading though, especially with the frills to give it more depth, and where the dress folds c:
The lines seem a bit too sharp as well, especially on the CI.
Definitely cute so far though, I like the design! Let me know if you have any questions and I hope the mentions above help a bit c:
I just started using Clip Studio Paint, I like it a whole lot better than even photoshop which I've been using for so many years until now :3
I was going to erase and completely redo the shading actually :c so I'll keep that in mind for the frills and folds.
I think the brush I was using was on block that's why they're so sharp. So I should switch to a softer brush that draws the lines not just in solid black but instead in black and shades of gray on the edges?
Thanks so much for your all your advice ^_^
Right now it looks like you've done the line art with a 'pixel' brush, where as with Subeta style art, you need to use soft brushes.
My other tip for you is that right now the top of the dress is the correct 3/4ths pose, but the bottom from the bow down is facing forwards instead of being in a 3/4ths position. C:
Okay so the softer brushes for the lineart as well thanks!
So the bottom of the dress should be rotated towards the HA's right is that what you mean? So the bow closer to the HA's right and the HA's right side has more red overskirt?
Thanks so much for your advice :)
I'm not familiar with this tool, I've always used photoshop!
But I'd definitely use a softer brush for lines and see how they look, these seem too pixelated.
Don't be afraid to look at existing items to understand how they were shaded, one that comes to mind the have much more shading, especially darker in between the 'layers' of frills, don't be afraid to shade it, it creates a nice separation between them and makes it look more 'real'. c:
Hopefully this helps as a general idea of what I meant!
I'll for sure try out the softer brushes c: Thanks for the shading reference! I was having trouble finding one that matches what I was looking for. I was getting confused because they say they want cel shading but a lot of items seemed mixed but more gradient based shading side to me.
Thanks! :)
That helps a lot! Thank you so much! :)
So, the HA's anatomy is reversed. On the HA's left (what we see on our right) is what Mesmer was talking about :) Because of that turn, yes, there should be more of the red overskirt on the HA's left.
Also, are you using black lineart? Can't really tell if it's black due to the pixelation.
And going to chime in on the need for a little more shading as well. 3-5 distinctive shades is what subeta recommends.
Oops mistype, I saw it correctly in my head but wrote it wrong :c
It is black, but yeah I'll be fixing the line art with a softer brush.
3-5 distinct shades okay, it felt like a lot for a small image. I'll fiddle around and get it to work eventually haha
Thanks so much! :)
@ Naoto All artists have different styles, so for some you'll see the abrupt changes, and for a lot of them you'll see more of the gradient type.
I just went through wardrobe and looked at items by recency, and here are some of the CI's I found to show the 3-5 shades at first glance:
Or you can be lazy like me and just do this:
Make one part of the CI really obvious with the different shades, lol. Unfortunately lazy=tacky, so yeah :P
Good luck! ^-^
