Ok, let me try this again. I think i talked too much before or something haha. So TL;DR -
This is a thing i discovered a few weeks ago and i like it. Anybody else like it? Wanna chat about the weird goings-on in Night Vale or maybe just the weather?
I'm sad that there are no replies here yet, because I love this podcast and I wish more people knew about it. Do not approach the Dog Park!
Hi there! Me too...and surprised, because i've seen it mentioned in at least a couple people's signatures (that's how i discovered it, in fact) and there are several WTNV fanpets around. They may not pay attention to this part of the forums though...or maybe my original wordy first post left nothing to be said. X'D
Dog Park? What Dog Park? I'm not even aware of the Dog Park, of course. :P
I discovered NVR around mid-2014, and have followed it since. It triggers my asmr beautifully, though the ads in some newer eps are rather grating compared to the old ones, which put a stop to me falling asleep to it as I once did. (One day I plan to edit all the files I've saved to remove that loud voice.)
Some evenings, I would pull all the lounge cushions to the floor to make a bed in front of the tv, and drift off to epic naps listening to NVR.
I particularly enjoy The Weather. Check out Eliza Rickman singing Pretty Little Head in her living room.
I had to look up ASMR, I had no idea that that had a name. I always just called it "head tinglies." As a side note, one of my favorite triggers for this is Twitch streamers who have mechanical gaming keyboards.
Some of my favorite songs have come from The Weather, in particular:
"Those Days Are Gone, and My Heart Is Breaking", Barton Carroll "Cover Me Up", Jason Isbell "Long Gone", Mary Epworth "Peanuts", Sam n Ash
I haven't finished listening to all of the episodes, though. I think I'm around episode 50 or so.
Oh, I love meeting fellow tinglers / asmr experiencers. ✨💖
Unintentional triggers are fabulous; my strongest triggers are also related to clinking or clicking sounds. I love the methodic or precise clicking of mechanical keyboards (I'm going to have to search out those Twitch streamers now), as well as the clinking that can be heard when someone meticulously searches a bag or handbag, moving certain items around within, the careful sorting of plastic or wood pieces such as LEGO. Fingers dragging across a wooden brush, fingernails tapping on wood, pressing skin against a frictional surface (such as vinyl) and releasing it gently to make a sound.
I'll check out those songs, it's been a while since I went through the earlier parts of the series. :>
I had to look up ASMR too, i'd never heard of that before. It's really interesting and i wish i could think of a time when i might have experienced something like that. From what i read, it sounds like it's usually triggered by soft sounds such as whispering, and the only reaction such sounds elicit from me (if anything at all) is an inexplicable disgust. I hate whispering, just hate it so much. The soft sound of candy wrappers rustling in a theater makes me want to strangle someone. Generally, anything that is the sound of someone trying (and failing) to do something quietly drives me up the wall. So i guess i have the opposite of ASMR maybe? Or perhaps i do experience it but i don't interpret it as pleasurable? Certain sounds do make me physically cringe and maybe tingle in a bad way. That's disappointing. ._.
I've tried to fall asleep listening to WTNV (i have trouble falling asleep so anything that could help with that would be great). I really love the way Cecil says good night and it would be ideal if i could just go to sleep right after that, but it never works. I end up going back over the story in my head and being even more awake. X'D
I have to admit i don't always care for the weather but there have been some i really enjoy too. I don't remember the names of all of them but "Pretty Little Head" was a good one! The one about waiting for the bus in the rain was super fun (and there was another more recently that kind of reminded me of it). And i really liked the one from the last episode (83) too. My favorite music from WTNV has been Disparition's themes though, especially the earlier seasons' opening theme.
, most of my friends do not experience asmr. Having a shiver run down their spine from a very moving piece of music is the closest some people get. My bestie experiences no tingles outside of the odd music shiver (which she says is rare).
It's strange, but I thought it was just a regular thing that everyone experiences until I read about it. :>
Keeping in mind you dislike whispers and intentionally quiet sounds, you may or may not enjoy some of "Dr. Dimitri's" head massage or ear cleaning videos on youtube. MassageASMR is the channel. He also does some pretty lulzy but enjoyable roleplays, which I can easily relax to. Just avoid the whispering and quiet ones, I guess.
I -might- be able to relate to the "music shiver" thing. And i find that certain voices are just very nice to listen to. I'm not sure it's an ASMR thing though; i'll have to start paying more attention for that. I'll check out the videos you suggested and see if they have any effect; i'm very curious about it now! I'm surprised i haven't run into anything like that already. I've actually ended up on that side of Youtube pretty often, investigating supposedly "hypnotic" relaxation videos, binaural beats, "creepy" infrasound and such...none of which have had any effect on me, disappointingly, but i'm not even sure Youtube and/or my equipment can play it back properly.
I think I saw something in the ASMR wikipedia article about the opposite effect being called misophonia, a negative reaction to quiet repetitive sound.
I'm not too fond of whispering myself. I prefer mechanical clicking (as on a keyboard), or cutting noises (someone using a paper cutter, cutting fabric with scissors, etc). In fact, some of my earliest memories of this are being at the fabric store with my mom when I was a child, and hearing the lady behind the counter cutting the yardage my mom wanted to buy.
Disparition's themes for the show have been on point. Very atmospheric, and they set the mood well!
There are 2 other Night Vale fans in the office I work at, and we make references to it all the time. I have a Night Vale City Council public service announcement hanging above my desk. It has a drawing of an alligator with "CAN ALLIGATORS EAT YOUR CHILDREN? YES." and the Night Vale logo on it.
It's hard to find streamers who don't have loud electronic music in the background and/or aren't constantly talking to their stream chat or about the game, unfortunately.
I just encountered that term as well and i'm wondering to what extent (if any) misophonia and ASMR are related. I see they both often have the same triggers. They both kind of seem like two sides of the same coin; i've just only ever really noticed the negative response in myself. There aren't that many sounds that bother me that much though (i can only think of maybe half a dozen in particular). I can definitely see how mundane sounds can be linked to memories though, like your fabric-cutting example, and having it recall a pleasant memory could make the sound itself pleasant (i can think of some of those for myself, like the sound of a prop plane flying over...i don't even know why, but i seem to recall it from childhood and it's a happy noise for me). Memories may not necessarily be related to ASMR but perhaps it could have something to do with it, at least in some cases. And if ASMR and misophonia are related, perhaps our memories and experiences can influence whether our reaction to a trigger will be pleasure or repulsion (at least one of my repulsion triggers has bad memories attached for sure). Anyway, i think it's interesting.
Exactly, Disparition's themes set the perfect mood. I've looked up a lot of their other stuff too and i like all of it. I wish they'd also do the weather sometimes!
And that's awesome...i keep trying to get people i know in real life into WTNV but i can't seem to get anyone interested. I end up making references to it anyway and people are like, "Huh?" Aaagh! Well if you'd listen to the awesome thing i told you about, you'd know what i'm on about! XP
EDIT: Never mind whatever rambling i was doing about ASMR before; i didn't quite know what it was supposed to be because i hadn't experienced it. But i finally got a chance to check out some of these videos...and this kind of blows my mind! The first few i tried just annoyed me or were simply boring, but i have found a couple now that have definitely elicited the ASMR response in me. They make my scalp and arms and legs actually tingle, it's like being tickled in a nice way. SUPER weird...how have i gone my entire life and not even realized this was a thing? :o I guess it had to be suggested to me first or i had to be in the right frame of mind or something, but this is crazy. I'm pretty sure i'd normally find these sounds aggravating but in these videos, somehow they're not. Even some of the whispering is kind of pleasant. o_O And they don't seem to be sounds with any particular associations for me, just some random brushing and scraping noises...what IS this, you guys?! XD (Thanks for the suggestion, it is in fact one of MassageASMR's videos that works for me! I'll keep checking out more of them; this is strangely addictive haha)
I believe nostalgia can trigger asmr, simply because asmr activates the parts of your brain which release chemicals potentially creating euphoria, and it stands to reason that nostalgia, having close attention paid to you, or other positive association experiences might increase any already triggering sense of euphoria. However, as you've discovered, , it is a physical chemical response. Grats on discovering you experience asmr -- I should now inform you that you can "wear it out" by seeking or experiencing it, but let me assure you it will build back up and you'll be able to experience it again. Like any chemical response, you can run out or become immune for a while, before your brain settles and produces more, and puts you back into a more reactive state. How it occurs, the intensity you feel, how long it takes to build up again, etc, varies in the individual both naturally and according to mood, as much as any other chemical response (eg, orgasm).
The discovery of new things is always a good reminder that some things exist whether you believe in them or not.
, that public service announcement above your desk is amazing. xD
What i was saying before still sounds like it makes sense, i guess, but i'm putting aside all my previous conjecture from before i actually experienced it because it's really not what i thought it would be. I assumed it was about a pleasant emotional feeling but it's really physical. And as far as associations go, i'm someone who actually hates to be touched and i dread close-contact experiences like haircuts and doctor visits, but the videos still feel nice.
It really does seem to be about my frame of mind going into it too, but it's sort of like a switch that's easy to flip now. At first, and after a little break from them, the videos look like silly annoying BS to me but i can just decide to get into them and they start working almost immediately. I had to go out last night and when i got home the video tab was still open; at first i was like "what on Earth was i doing? and i bet it won't work anymore" but it did. It's a lot like those "Magic Eye" 3D pictures; at first they look like nothing but a boring, abstract bunch of dots. But when you learn how to see them and use the right focus, it suddenly becomes amazing.
Aaand i'm going to go ahead and pretend this is completely on topic because i feel like i just discovered some kind of paranormal weirdness straight out of Night Vale or something. Videos that make me tingle all over, what the heck even? XD And i'm so glad you brought this up, Paks! Maybe i'll find ASMR triggers in WTNV now too...
Sorry for taking you all off topic. xD The experience you describe is similar to mine, though I can be triggered unintentionally as well. It's quite distracting if I'm having a conversation with someone and their voice, or something they're doing, starts to set me off. :>
The main storyteller's voice in WTNV does it for me.
Don't be sorry! Like i said, i'm really glad you mentioned it! :D I actually like going off-topic if that's where the conversation goes, but i don't know how strict the rules are on that here. X'D
And i actually found myself starting to wonder about that...if i'm going to find unexpected things that set me off in real life too. I ate ramen last night and suddenly became hyper-aware of my own noodle-slurping sounds. No reaction, but i was almost waiting for it. This is all so weird lol
I love WTNV! I had the pleasure of being able to go to one of their live shows as well, which was super awesome. :D
I haven't listened in a while though and I am sorely behind in terms of podcasts. I find that I listen to it the most whenever I'm on a super long road trip because I like being able to listen to it all in one go.
I've also just bought the book, which I'm starting to read. It's a good read so far, but definitely not the same without Cecil's voice narrating it.

It is possible that you will see hooded figures in the dog park. DO NOT APPROACH THEM. DO NOT APPROACH THE DOG PARK. The fence is electrified and highly dangerous. Try not to look at the dog park, and, especially, do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures. The dog park will not harm you.
...I haven't listened in a few episodes. Well a few being 15 or so. I did go to a live show 2 Years ago in Detroit, MI! It was fun! And I got to meet Cecil, Dylan and everyone else... In line someone was passing out name tags... and we all wrote on them, "Hi! I am Joseph Fink." That is still hanging up in my car on my rear view mirror.
I recently finished the book, and it was ok, but I didn't think it was great. I just didn't care enough about any of the main characters. Oh well, there were still a few good parts, but I think overall Night Vale is best suited to an audio format.
I'm jealous of both of you for being able to go to a live show. :(
I'm working through it now. It isn't a page-gripper for me and I do enjoy hearing Cecil's soothing voice. It's interesting but not my favourite?
I was super fortunate they were making a stop at my city. Honestly, I didn't know if the ticket price (it was CAD $50) was worth it, but we had excellent seats and it was really like a concert. If you have a chance you should definitely go.
