We're back up and running! Going down at 1am EST on a Saturday is unfortunate when it's a problem only one person can resolve. We're back up and have additional servers running.

The actual problem: The script that runs when a new server comes online wasn't doing it's job correctly and downloading the must up to date version of Subeta, and Subeta checks to make sure that it's the most up to date version and will go offline if it isn't (so that we don't end up with buggy old code running) and so it basically killed itself. I've updated all of the servers running and told the system not to add/remove any servers until this can be handled.

Oh damn. Well, that's one of those security things, that can be a pain in the arse if you're not home. XD

Thank you for the information. I wonder if this is related at all to the server error I keep experiencing with Safari on my computer. Lately, whenever I try to go on subeta with my computer I get an error saying "safari can't connect to the server at subet.net. And all this time I was thinking it was just something on my end.

Woo, thanks! Was worried when the site just vanished (kind of good though because it stopped my morning procrastination from studying haha)

And there's no way other people can warn that one person if this happens? Six hours downtime is very long for a website to be down without anyone noticing but the users or being able to contact the right person. Not being bitchy, just asking!

So that's what happened! Thanks so much for the explanation. Makes sense and yes it's a pain when only one person can fix it. :/ I echo Evy - is there a way that, if/when something like this happens - there is a "phone tree" so someone seeing it here on staff can text or otherwise notify you so you will know quicker? Of course, there may still be times you are otherwise occupied and unable to get to it immediately and there will still be a wait, but at least you would know asap. :)

It sucked that during the downtime there was no messages from anyone on the team. Eg. Through Facebook and Twitter.

Admittedly I was out and about during the downtime, but maybe if more site admins could access the Facebook/Twitter they could update it themselves with: "Yeah we know the site is down, and we're trying to fix it?"
