So I DM a group of 6 that play D&D every Friday night and one of the players keeps throwing a fit every time he doesn't get his way. We are currently wrapping up a star wars themed campaign and next semester we are starting a normal D&D campaign at the request of several members. However he doesn't want to do a normal campaign he wants to keep doing star wars. In response to not getting his way he is opening his own campaign spring semester. How should I be dealing with this. I'm a relatively new DM and he is one of my friends but he keeps doing things like this. How do I keep the fun in it when He will probably take half are group with him? any advice?
I asked my boyfriend who DM's a lot, and he says that you shouldn't worry about it too much. Crappy players like that generally aren't great DM's, and maybe he'll invite you and you'll get to play some instead of running the game. Even if he takes some members, they probably will come back.
Thanks For the advice, I hope so. its really fun to get to spend that time with my friends every week.
Depending on the overall situation I'd possibly say just ignore that person and let him see if he is happy with that or rather wants to try to fit in. But I don't know you or your group, so that's just what I would do by now after some bad experiences with disrespectful, rude or just uninterested/lazy people who never made it in time, forgot their character sheets or anything basically...
But you have quite few options aside from that so solve the problem peacefully. (At least you can hope for that, obviously that depends on the people involved.)
Have you talked to the other people in your group about the issue? Do they feel the same way about his behavior?
If you think it might lead to a reasonable discussion try to talk to him about the issue. Maybe he's not even realizing he's annoying you. Maybe a typical fantasy setting is just not his thing so you are all better off with him not in this campain? I personnaly don't like high-tech, space, robots or mech related stuff too much, so to not ruin it for the others I'd not participate in most cases. Sometimes it's better not to join something if you would not have fun and possibly ruin it for others.
Why not have two campains? Maybe you can find two evenings per week to play or play every other week. You get both and hopefully everyone is satisfied.
Also as said bad players rarely make good game masters.
