I personally love the Honor Harrington series. It's a little hard to get into at first and there are a lot of characters to remember, but once the plot gets going it's a very entertaining read. The Star Kingdom series (a sort-of prequel) is another good one, and it's easier to get into.

Might sound silly to say but have you read Enders Game? It is so good. Really, like forget everything you thought about the movie. It is just great.

What kind of sci-fi do you like? And are you looking for new or older stuff?

I can recommend about a jillion things, but it would help to know the answers to these two questions so I can narrow down a bit. :)

Definitely William Gibson's Neuromancer. Hannu Rajaniemi's stuff is great, too.

I really recommend The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. :) I'm not quite sure what your overall taste might be, but this book is great if you like to analyze. It also has some rather mature subjects in it, so I'm not sure how you feel about that. Overall, it's a great book and it's definitely one of my favorites.

I barely remember what they were about, but I do remember that, not being a sci-fi fan, I was blown away and absolutely loved Dan Simmons' books about Hyperion and Endymion. :)

It depends on the kind of sci-fi you are looking for. I highly recommend The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov (first three books are the best) and Stanislaw Lem's work. Both authors wrote hard science fiction and their stories (especially Lem's) raise philosophical and moral questions so if you like that type of literature you should be pleased.

+1 Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card +1 The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov

I would also add some of my all-time sci-fi faves:

Dune by Frank Herbert (and the other 5 books in the series) Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood

I'm excited to check out everyone's recommendations!

Stephen King's Dark Tower series is a must read for anybody with a beating heart.

& I'd definitely second Card's Ender's Game and anything by Margaret Atwood (Atwood is wonderful if you're a feminist as well).

I haven't read a ton of sci-fi, but two stand-outs for me so far have been:

  • The Martian by Andy Weir
  • 172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad

If you've only seen the film adaptation of The Martian, you have to read the book. It is so much better. Way funnier. And 172 Hours is more...ominous. It involves a lottery in which the winners (three teens) will be sent to the moon to generate some funding for NASA or whatever. It's an interesting one. Quite haunting.

I really like Elizabeth Bear, I would recommend the Jenny Casey Trilogy if you like sci fi that's still got a foothold in our current world and Dust if you like things to be totally futuristic.

1.) dune series by frank herbert 2.) ender's game & sequels by orson scott card 3.) pretty much any short story by phillip k dick 4.) sprawl trilogy & bridge trilogy by william gibson 5.) snow crash by neal stephenson

but if you only pick one, pick dune. and DON'T forget the house prequels, at least two of them are pretty good too. not sure about the butlerian jihad books, as i haven't read them, nor if they have added anything past the main series (dune through sandworms of dune) or the house books (atreides, corrino, harkonnen).

Dune's a good one. and Isaac Asimov is one of a few authors I always check libraries and used bookstores for.

I finally finished reading Blade Runner (aka Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) by Philip K. Dick. Honestly, I love how the classics of sci-fi are actual bangers, as opposed to classic lit, or classic rock.

It's a soft variety of sci-fi, but I really enjoyed the Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Brown. If you're looking for harder sci-fi, the Martian (as suggested above) is a very excellent book, if a bit harder in science than I usually read.

Though his works are more fantasy, I would recommend pretty much anything by Brandon Sanderson. I've read his Mistborn trilogy, Stormlight Archives (only 2 books out so far in this series), the Reckoner series, and Warbreaker and all have been great. Can't recommend his writing enough.
