I do remember that when the last contest took place, people expressed their interest in seeing all the entries. Well, thank you for showing us everything this time. Pros of doing it like this: • yes, everyone gets to see every entry • shorter voting duration overall, as there's only one round

BUT - cons of doing it like this: • the voting takes very long for every single user due to the next two points: • the amount of votes per user in relation to the big pool of entries is too small and thus hard to narrow down • the voting page is incredibly long and impossible to keep an overview of

Tbh, voting has been a strain on my eyes and brain because of that page. There have been suggestions all over the news comments; I'm gonna list what I personally think would make sense.

My biggest issue was that it took ages to decide for only 5 out of 300. I'd be in favor of a voting process with two rounds, one for filtering, e.g. give everyone 20-25 votes - that's much easier to narrow down and thus quicker. Then have a second round, letting people vote for their favorite 2-3 out of the 15-25 with the most votes from the first round. I'm pretty sure people wouldn't mind to vote twice if that meant they hadn't to filter so closely through 300+ entries.

The other main issue for me was that the voting page layout was horrible to navigate due to a number of reasons. There were no borders between the entries to separate them and every line of entries being different in height didn't help. The latter also created an immense amount of whitespace under shorter entries. The decision to put three entries per line just added more whitespace as it was used to separate the entries horizontally. It was also confusing that there was no difference in text style between the actual entry text and the box label (Item Description, Logo Description), and the font size was pretty small. Finally, while narrowing my choice down, it was super hard to find those I had selected because of that mini checkbox - finding a few tiny blue checkboxes on a page that long is not fun.

SO. I guess that for vote submitting purposes everything has to be on one page; can't do much about length there but definitely about visual clarity. I'd suggest a layout similar to the recent cw contest - every entry taking the full page width, but clearly separated by horizontal lines. E.g. have the image on the left and the text on the right, then a horizontal line, then the next entry. That would take care of all the whitespace because each section would only be as long as needed (or max image height at most) and the next could come right after. If the 3-per-line layout is wanted, I'd actually put it into a grid - better visual separation, less whitespace. Both would definitely allow for a slightly bigger font size. I also liked about the cw contest voting layout that every selected entry would be highlighted in its entirety - much easier to see than a small blue checkbox when going through at the end and narrowing it down to the allowed number of votes.

TL;DR: I love that we actually get to see all of the entries, but I wish for a two-round system and a visually less tiring layout for the next one - the cw contest voting layout would work just fine.

Agreed - the voting page is incredibly cluttered, and after a few minutes of skimming through descriptions I started to blend them all together because there weren't any clear breaks. @ n @

I also wouldn't mind, if we had a similar contest to this, a voting system where we could see 10 at a time (so 10 would come up, you would vote for one from the ten, then it'd move on to the next 10, etc)!

Yeah, did anyone have a problem with the way voting worked in cosplay contests? The only issue I ever saw was that the random element was being a little too perfectly/imperfectly random and people had gone the entire event without seeing dozens, if not hundreds of entries. But it would work in something like this where you have 300 definitive entries. I think everything would be made better if they at least just did 10 a page, it's just a lot more tolerable.

With 300 randomized entries I haven't bothered to read any yet because for the sake of knowing I've given them all a chance, I need to wait until I have time to read them all at once because reading through half then going back and having that half scattered about through the half I haven't read would be torture.
[edit] Oh, Link to post admitting paginating is impossible. I can see your CW-contest style layout working a bit better, but tbh I still want pages. Hopefully they can figure out randomizing entrants on pages in the next contest. If we voted on a scale or a simple Yes/No elimination process until our top 5 were chosen I think it'd help that idea work than just simply throwing all the entries on the floor and telling us to pick up five. xD

I don't mind that we had to pick 5 of the 300. It would've been very helpful to be able to pick 20 or so and then weed through those selected entries for our final votes.

The inability to paginate becomes a non-issue when you take away the random aspect (which would be a smarter idea for the 'view 10, vote for 1 per page' thing), but I understand that random+pages is not gonna happen XD

That's disappointing. :( I don't like the idea of non-random pages because I have no doubt people will read the first couple pages and they'll get significantly more votes than people who happened to be on the last pages.

I agree that two stages of voting would probably be more beneficial. There will probably be a lot of entries that only get just one vote each. Is the order random each time? I wonder how many will take the time to go through all of the entries, otherwise the ones near the bottom might not get as much love as the ones near the top. If the order is randomized then whatever.

I've got to agree that this time around the voting is pretty difficult to get through with all the entries. I think a lot of this can be attributed to the sheer amount of text involved in these entries vs. other contests where we've had single HA images to view and the like. I do like being able to see everything, but it's already a bit overwhelming. If there had been more entries it could quickly get to be way too much all at once due to the sheer amount of information submitted for each entry. I've yet to manage to sift my way through all the entries this time and am not sure I'll really have the time to before voting closes out. If this had been an HA voting contest though, I think this format would be just fine.

I like the paging idea to help with organization, but the random factor will forever worry me. I remember the last EpiCon cosplay contest. I voted so many times it was absolutely ridiculous (I go kinda event crazy :P), but I still missed hundreds upon hundreds of HAs in the voting pool. Something was definitely not right, and I wouldn't trust that voting system again myself.

I do like that once you've voted your selections are highlighted at the top of the page. Good idea.

I already posted my suggestions for improvement on the voting newspost.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one who has issues with the layout of that page. But I wouldn't have a CLUE how to fix it. Some of the suggestions mentioned here though sounds great. MY biggest problem was that the page kept freezing which normally only happens with A LOT of images on one page...but there weren't THAT many images...so I'm not real sure what was going on there. My personal opinion on one thing though, they probably shouldn't let you vote for yourself.

I agree with allowing even a higher selection based on the number of entires. So for 300 entries, you should have had 50 choices. with that many, you would have probably scrolled through the whole thing just ticking ones you liked. then after that, you should have your same 50 that you chose, and that has to be narrowed down to 10 (because 5 is too little) and then the winners should be chosen from the sites second batch of votes.

That would more than likely guarantee most entries were seen/had a chance to be chosen.

Oh, and pagination could work for this option too. even 100 per page, with it showing up random FOR EACH USER (meaning group A had these 100 show up first, group B has a different 100 show up first, and group C had the last 100 show up first) and not shuffling positions when you went to the second page. Subeta has to come up with something better than this. It's out there, we just need to find it lol.

This needs to be split in two categories, entries with pics and entries with no pics. Even if staff is telling "Yo, don't just vote for cool pics", the userbase seems to be ignoring this.

Of course, entries with pics have something more, an extra oomph. 5 winners for each category would be fair, imo. That way, good art that blends well with the brew gets rewarded, and outstanding brews with no art don't get overlooked

I know I was voting based on names. I have 3 with art, and 2 without. But yes, that could have helped a lot too. Staff could theoretically do this right now. voting just started. just clear the page and let us revote.

I like that we're getting to see all of the entries, but the page could definitely do with some ordering to make it easier to follow because as it is you have to scroll down and back up and down again and all of the entries are different lengths and it's a bit chaotic.

I also agree with that splitting "with images" and "without images" may be a good idea; even though I'm consciously trying not to favour those with art I still feel my eyes being dragged over to those entries because there's something to bolster my imagination there.

im curious about who thought making people read through 300 beer logo descriptions was gonna be a good idea and how they didn't see that images had an obvious advantage

do you even brains subeta wtf

Your signature is 913 px wide by 77 px tall. Please note this can be affected by CustomCSS if you have any.

(Because text affects the width of your signature, we suggest testing with all text removed to be sure your width is correct.)

I agree that the voting page was super long and was difficult to navigate. This is my first year on Subeta and I think it is great that they are allowing the users to create a new item, but I was surprised at how many entries there are to choose from. It was a bit overwhelming so I had to just scroll through the names and a few descriptions and just make my choices based on what name I thought fit well on the site.

I agree that I think separate voting for entries with images and without would be much, much better with contests like this. I mean, no matter the staff warning, it seems obvious that entries with art will have an advantage.

Also, two-round voting is a great idea!
