sMail needs a makeover

to be brief, sMail is... in really dire need of an update. the page is clunky, unintuitive, and difficult to navigate. the process for deleting or moving messages is tedious: you have to check the messages to move/delete, then select either 'delete' or 'move,' and if you are moving the message you have to select the destination from a drop down. the button to return to your inbox is unclear - that should be one of the most important buttons, and therefore it should be the clearest one on the page, right next to the 'new message' button.
additionally, the bar measuring how much space you have doesn't seem to work at all - i've seen people with lots of messages report that it goes from green to yellow, or even red, but the amount the bar shows 'full' seems unrelated to how many messages you actually have. for instance, i have 6 messages in my inbox and the bar is green and appears almost completely full; people with lots of messages say their bar is yellow and appears partly full. someone actually likened it to a health bar, where having few messages = good health, so the bar is full and green, and having too many messages = bad health, so the bar is empty and red. but this doesn't seem like it's actually the intention of the design, simply a mistake of the coding. actually, i don't think the bar is necessary at all, especially if it doesn't work properly.
the entire layout is messy and just seems very hasty/poorly thought out, and it hasn't been changed in many, many years. (also, that phishing warning doesn't seem necessary to have on the page 100% of the time - maybe just the first time you visit the page, and if it has to be there at least have a 'remove' button for it.) below i've included what i would consider to be a better layout.

obviously it's just a rough mock-up but i think it makes way more sense than what we have now. this is a significant area of the site that is miles behind in terms of functionality compared to the rest of the site, and though i know you maybe wanted to wait for the "full recode" to change things like this, i think it is high time to acknowledge that such a thing will not be happening any time soon and simply give in and fix what needs to be fixed in the moment.
sMail has been in a state of being rewritten for a really long time, other things have just taken priority. Maybe post wardrobe-v3 it'll be on the front, since it actually needs an entire backend change, it's really, really bad for the site. If we made some basic changes in the way it handles messages we'd be able to let everyone have a lot more on their account.
