I started a new job recently and I find myself nervous when talking to customers. Silly, I know. My boss does not like this one bit and I got in trouble for it today. What can I do to not be so quiet and make customers feel welcome? I know it sounds ridiculous, but I really would like to know what you think.

I don't think that's silly at all. May I ask what the job is?

I was a receptionist for a year or so and I would get really nervous answering the phone and greeting people. It gets better with time and practice. Just smile, say your "lines", and make sure they know you're there if they need you. Depending on your job though, it may be more involved than that.

I get really nervous talking to people myself. I hate that you got in trouble with your boss. :( Some people don't understand how hard it can be to talk to people, whether it's for a job or not.

I completely understand. I have social anxiety and I'm a receptionist - yeah, answering phones, the door, talking to people, etc. But I'm getting a lot better with it with time. I've been here almost a year now. It's almost like I'm developing into a different personality in a way...I'm really outgoing and cheerful at work 99% of the time. Sure, I have off days - who doesn't? But it's definitely getting better. Have you tried explaining your anxiety to your boss? Your boss sounds like an asshole, honestly. You'd think anyone would understand that not everyone is super outgoing. I'd talk to your boss if you think they'd listen. Or maybe talk to a coworker you're comfortable with, see if they have any tips. I honestly don't know what makes me okay doing this job. Maybe because I'm at a desk and the desk has little foot-high walls on the top that kind of gives me a 'safe zone'? Anyways, good luck! Just tell yourself that the customers are not judging you, they aren't thinking bad things of you, that they're friendly and nice...keeping telling yourself those things and maybe it'll help.

Thanks for posting, girls. I have been working in a small coffee shop and got let go today because of my social anxiety. I did the very best I could while working and my boss was just very rude and impatient with me. I will find something better. xx

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that!!! :( Just know you did your best and stay positive. Your boss sounds like a jerk, so hopefully you at least dodged a bullet by not having to work with them anymore. I wish you the very best on your search!

It will be okay! I felt very unwelcome when I went to work and I am glad I won't have to return and have that stress on my shoulders. Thank you for the kind words and for the sticker!
