I have noticed that there are a-lot of users who have disabilities and it would be cool to have a disability day. It could raise awareness of lots of different disabilities including rare diseases like Ehler's Danlos Syndrome and the common ones. There could be different ribbons that represent the disabilities as wearables.

I feel this could easily turn out into: WHAT ABOUT MY DISEASE. There are just too many rare and usually also painful diseases out there and if you go select a few then you discriminate the rest. It's not fun to come online and see that they selected a bunch of disabilities and diseases and see your own left while you have so many problems because of it.

And the common thing with awareness is: not every disease/disability is identical for different people and it can make people angry. Example: a while ago we had a tv show over here that featured a character with autism and it generated tons of attention and positive criticism because it was considered realistic. And when the local autism support group posted praising about the show on fb it got angry reactions: This is not my autism, how do they dare to make my child look like this, this is unrealistic and the writers should be ashamed, etc etc. People were furious because it talked about autism and it didn't cover their personal experiences. I can see this happening with a lot of disabilities.

Personally I think it's not Subeta their job to raise awareness for all disabilities and diseases out there, there are thousands and it would take years with a different awareness every day to do them all justice. This is a pet site, not an awareness site.

The most I would like to see is maybe a day where they release disability/disease related items? Canes, wheelchairs (not necessarily wearable), therapy dog, Braille book, the Braille extention thing for computers (no idea what it's called), or books like: "Me and my black dog", "Handicaps and jobs", "Hospitals inside out", etc.

Oh and this comes from someone with a disability.

I'm not a fan of the ribbon idea, simply because there's so many different ones (and if I remember rightly, there's several that all use the same colour?), but I do support [user=Tobias ]'s idea of the related items like canes, wheelchairs and the therapy dogs :D

Ribbons are copyrighted by associations already. Subeta would have to pay rights for that.

Having awareness ribbons on a virtual pet site, doesn't really seem like it would do much.

I do support the idea of releasing stuff related to disbilites such as support animals, wheel chairs, canes, breathing supplies etc.

I know sketched up a concept art sketch of what a wearable might look like but that was years ago.

Not going to lie, I would love a day where they released a bunch of items related to many different disabilities. I know that there will be people upset if this-or-that wasn't mentioned, but it would still be nice.

We do also have these:

I would rather stop focusing on what makes us different. I have my own disabilities, but I don't really feel it necessary to show them off or drum up pride for them.

SHH I STILL NEED THOSE TWO, WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT THEM UNTIL I HAVE THEM.

I'm not about this "let's show off our disabilities with ribbons and stuff!" because idk man, this isn't a "my disability is worse than yours" competition. It just.. feels weird to me. But I can get behind more items for them like Tobias mentioned. We lack stuff like that, and it would be nice to have on site (TC FODDER I DON'T EVEN CARE IF IT IS WEARABLE)

I absolutely love the reoccurring idea of medical supplies (And I know for a fact has said several times she really likes the idea too, it's just a matter of finding a place to put such a niche concept.. like wheelchairs and canes and medical equipment really screams do something with me don't just stick me in home appliances please)-- and I really really hope whenever that takes place, that we get a whole bunch of reference books involving the body, mind, and the disabilities and illnesses that plague both.

I also feel like this idea, at face value, has good intentions but probably isn't the best of ideas. I think we ALL remember when the Heartburn zombie skin came out, and people lost their minds because it was based on a horribly sad disease that effects babies. The skin isn't malicious, at all, it doesn't make a mockery of the disease and while I don't remember the name off the top of my head I DO remember I went straight to google upon finding out it was based off of something real. However, it caused a HUGE fit from users saying it was in poor taste-- my point is, I forsee the exact same thing happening with this.

If it's literally just awareness and ribbons-- 1. the ribbons are copyrighted, 2. only cover so many diseases, and 3. any disease that's left off... will cause a stir. If it's anything more than ribbons, it'll be called out as being in poor taste + forgetting about other diseases.

Not to mention, there's diseases of the mind that're just as bad as physical disabilities and there are disabilities that effect both, and just... there's so many. Not to mention a lot of people come to subeta/online to get away from the things that effect their day to day life, and there's people who already mock diseases as not being real (namely mental diseases). And of course, let's not forget that what is or isn't a disability changes a lot depending on where you live-- in some parts of the world obesity is considered a disease (and in other parts, is quite literally illegal depending on your age). It just has the potential to get really messy, and I'd prefer to just, not.

However, I still will always support more medical based items/books/whatnot :'D

I agree with that it would be nice if they released more items possibly. I don't think there should be a certain day for it though. Some people might not want to be reminded they have a disability. Maybe that's why some come here to get away from reality for a little bit. I would worry some might leave if it happened and they shouldn't have to feel that way. ..like their being judged again.

As easily angered as the users are, I really doubt they would have the same reaction to the creation of awareness ribbons as they did to the site using Harlequin Ichthyosis, a devastating and often fatal disease that strikes children from birth as the inspiration for a zombie base.

I still don't agree with adding a ton of ribbons on site.

I really would like to see a separate store added, in particular for the items that were last added to Home Appliances:

Aren't all zombies based on dead people? They have to have inspiration from something and could potentially be offensive to anyone.

You missed the context of the statement you quoted that was, like, one sentance before it. Since you apparently missed it

I then, mentioned the part you quoted in the context of if it was anything more than just ribbons. However, I don't doubt people would get in a tiff if there were ribbons and disabilities weren't included. Thank you for only quoting part of what I said and making it seem like I said people would fly off the handle over ribbons though c:

I really apologize that's how my post came across, it wasn't my intention at all. :( I do actually think I overlooked or at least misread that portion of your post.

Ooh I didn't know those items existed! Thanks for bringing them up :D

I really like the idea of adding more service and therapy animals too, including other species. (Guide mini-horses? Yes please! And they do really exist :) ) More medical stuff in general would be nice too. I'm working on a pet who cures fevers, and it's hard finding stuff for his TC. I think a separate shop for the medical stuff would be cool, and they could move the ones that currently sock in Home Appliances.

[edit] "Currently SOCK"? Lofty, it's time to get some rest...

No for a couple reasons.

  1. Ribbons are copyrighted. Susan G Koman especially loves to sue the fuck out of anyone who uses their ribbon.
  2. Realistically not all diseases could be represented. People will get upset that if isn't a part of it. 3.a Most likely only the really well known ones would be addressed (autism, bi polar, eating disorders, etc). And honestly, I think we has members of subeta are typically already well aware of these diseases. We don't need to be told of these things. We already know about them, we probably know someone who has it. 3.b If they do go about more obscure ones, only a small handfull of people on here is affected, or knows someone who is, and therefore, honestly, a lot of people probably won't be totally interested. People like things they can relate to. A super obscure disease they have never heard of, nor know anyone with it? Probably won't generate much interest.
  3. It may turn into a pissing contest of "who has it worse." Someone who has a mild case of xyz shares their experience, and then is over shadowed by someone else who has a severe case of xyz.

I love a lot of the community on here, but there are a lot of really immature players who will get their feelings hurt over some aspect of this. Either by not being represented, feeling they are being misrepresented, or by just being a general pain in the butt.

Personally, I don't think there should be a whole day tributed to disabilities. Mostly because then every other group would want their own day. Also not everyone that has a disability likes to show it off loud and proud.

I would like to see more handicap items on site though!
