So I've been trying to figure out how to get this to work, as I have Paint Tool SAI. At some point or another SOMEONE detailed how to make the images in SAI for overlays transparent, but no matter what I search in google or on here, I cannot find it anywhere. I know I've done it once before, but it's very frustrating that I can't find it now. ;_;
Does anyone know how to make the pet overlay transparent in SAI? :/ Any help would be VERY appreciated. Thank you ;;
I haven't used this program, but when I googled it, I saw two things that might help you.
your background may already be transparent and all you need to do is save it as a .png file.
transparency is called density in that program, so look up density rather than transparent.

Thank you for your input. I always save images as .png and there is even an option whether or not I want to save it to be transparent or not.
Unfortunately even when I save the file to be transparent, it isn't...it works for other images that aren't Subeta pet overlays. There is a specific process for making the overlay come out transparent...I just...aurgh I know there is a way to do it. :/ This is gonna drive me nuts...
Moving this to the Art Discussion forum, as it's more suited to that. :)

No worries, it's what we're here for. You'll probably find better help here, too, since your question is about a graphics program.

Hello! For some reason, Paint Tool SAI makes it really difficult to save transparent images. I honestly forget how to do it or if there was a way to begin with.
This is how I would get around it, however. You just need an editing software that accepts psd files (photoshop, gimp - the latter of which is free).
And, voila, that should make the background transparent!
Let me know if this works. Good luck to you! :)

Hello~! I have GIMP and I know how to use that to make images transparent (that's the only thing I use it for as I really don't like GIMP otherwise) so while I really appreciate that, I already know more or less how to do it in GIMP. I appreciate very much the thought, though I'm still holding out that someone will remember the way to make the pet images transparent via SAI. ^^;;
I use SAI daily and to make images transparent, when I go to save it (always as a .png), an option box pops up called PNG Save Options. You can choose between 24bpp RGB or 32bpp ARGB (Each pixel have Opacity). Choose the 32bpp one and your image will be transparent if your background is white.
Alternatively, I remember also using another option under the Layers panel called Luminance to Transparency. It's been a while since I used that option so I don't exactly remember what it's for, but I remember it would make your images transparent as well, HOWEVER it will turn your images to grayscale, so only use it if you haven't colored yet.
Yes, I know how to save images as transparent normally, but the pet overlays don't save transparently when you do that. You have to go in and manually remove all the white space. :c
I know there was a way I saw how to do it with another layer of colour underneath the overlay, but I can't remember the specific steps to do it. :C It was on a journal on DA a long time ago, and I can't find it for the life of me...
Ugh, this is so frustrating. I really do appreciate everyone's input and help so far though, you've all been lovely!
Hey there! I don't think I can help you with your current situation but I can give you advice for your next overlay. After you finish your lineart(on its own layer) select all the area that is supposed to be white(basically the background) with the wand tool. Once you have everything selected go to Selection-Invert. It should make everything else selected. Create a layer underneath the lineart and fill it in.
There are two things you can do next: 1.) Keep the area selected still and create layers on top of it to add the other colors 2. Deselect the area and create the layers but each layer would need to be "clipped" down. The clipping group is a tack box above the layers where you can preserve opacity and what not. :)
What I personally do is keep the area selected while I put all my base colors down and then deselect it afterwards. I lock opacity on each layer and shade directly there. You can create layers and clip them to the base colors this way. That way when you try to add an overlay layer to say..the skin on something, it won't effect everything below it(layer wise).
When you're finished with the image make sure there is no background(a filled layer). Go to File-Save As-PNG. A prompt will come up and it'll ask you which format you want(24 and 32bpp and you'll want to select 32). When you upload the image it should be transparent.
Please note that in older versions of Sai, transparency was not supported. I am not sure if you've ever made images transparent there before but I thought I'd let you know.
Alternatively for this current overlay if you have the lineart separated from everything else you can select all the background space and use a large eraser brush to erase all the excess. You may miss a few pixels here and there so make sure you check it with a colored bg afterwards.
If you want anything explained more lemme know n-n. I work directly with Sai and transparency is key when it comes to overlays and custom wearables.
Huh, that's strange. I'm a bit confused as to why pet overlays would be any different than other work, but it's possible I just don't fully understand how pet overlays work. I'm sorry I couldn't be of any help, but I hope someone here knows how to do what you're looking for. :/
THE BIT WITH THE BACKGROUND, THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. HOLY CRAP THANK YOU SO MUCH.
: It's quite alright, again thank you so much! ^-^
